  • Risk Scope:
    Exposure to asbestos containing material (ACM) during maintenance tasks (such as drilling into or removal of ACM) or personnel being exposed to damaged/deteriorated ACM.

  • Control Objective:
    Ensure coal mine workers have awareness of asbestos containing material locations and work undertaken on ACM does not allow accidental exposure to airborne asbestos fibres.

Management of Asbestos Containing Material (ACM)

The design, implementation, maintenance and operation of the management of Asbestos Containing Material (ACM).

  • The design, implementation, maintenance and operation of the management of Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) is carried out in accordance with legislative requirements and the following site documentation:
    - GRM STD Asbestos Standard
    - GRM PLN Asbestsos Management Plan
    - GRM STD Permit to Work Standard
    - 305.01 GRM SOP Asbestos

  • 1a) All ACM is identified on the Site Asbestos Register/s and clearly labelled at the in-field location.

  • 1b) All ACM sites be inspected to assess its condition and potential risk to health on an annual basis.

  • Select 2 known asbestos locations, 1 each from the two site Asbestos Registers (Goonyella and Riverside).

  • Locate records pertaining to visual inspections of asbestos containing material within the past year for the selected locations.

  • Visit the location and compare the inspection records to current state.

  • Is permanent signage in place to indicate areas that contains asbestos or ACM?

  • Is the condition of the asbestos material adequate (i.e. bonded or sealed, intact and shows no signs of cracking/damage)?

  • Has the register been re-updated to reflect changes, and updated in Hummingbird (Hummingbird Number)?<br>

  • 2a) The removal and disposal of ACM is conducted in accordance with site procedures / permit to work process in order to prevent accidental exposure.

  • 2b) Coal Mine Workers understand the hazard associated with asbestos, and have received annual awareness training.

  • Review 1 active work front of asbestos work underway:

  • Is the individual / company licenced and insured? (Class A or B licence held by the business, not an individual).

  • Have permit to work requirements been met?

  • Has the site asbestos register been reviewed prior to any demolition or refurbishment work and updated at the completion of the work?

  • Do the work set-up and containment conditions meet the requirements of 305.01 GRM SOP Asbestos, including;

  • Are temporary barricades and signage erected where asbestos work is being carried out?

  • Has a Asbestos Clearance Certificate been completed in full and requirements met?

  • Select 2 Asbestos Workers:

  • Do Asbestos Workers understand the hazards and management strategies?

  • Have discussions with 2 CMW's:

  • Select 2 non Asbestos Workers:

  • Do CMW's not involved in the removal of asbestos understand the hazard and management strategies for asbestos?
