GRT Toolbox Talk: SG4-22 – Scaffold Safety
Introduction
Good morning/afternoon, everyone. Today, we are focusing on SG4-22, the latest industry standard for preventing falls in scaffolding operations. Falls from height remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in construction, making scaffold safety a top priority. SG4-22 outlines key best practices for scaffolding assembly, use, and dismantling, helping to create a safer work environment. By following these guidelines, we can reduce risks, prevent accidents, and ensure legal compliance. Let’s break down the key elements of SG4-22 and how they apply to our daily work.
SG4-22: Key Safety Principles
🔹 Advanced Guardrail System (AGR):
The AGR system provides collective fall protection during scaffold erection and dismantling.
Eliminates the need for harnesses and lanyards during key phases of scaffold assembly, reducing trip and snagging hazards.
Ensures a continuous line of protection, making scaffold erection safer and more efficient.
Scaffolders must be trained in AGR installation and always use it when applicable.
🔹 Dual Guardrails:
All scaffold platforms must have both inner and outer guardrails to prevent falls.
Guardrails should never be removed or modified unless authorized by a competent person.
Regular checks must be carried out to ensure guardrails are secure and in place.
A scaffold with missing or damaged guardrails must not be used under any circumstances.
🔹 Safe Access:
Access to scaffolds must be safe and controlled, using only approved ladders, staircases, or designated access points.
Unsecured or makeshift access methods (e.g., climbing frames or using unapproved steps) are strictly prohibited.
Ladders must be securely fastened and extend at least 1m above the landing platform.
Workers must always maintain three points of contact when using ladders.
🔹 Regular Inspections & Maintenance:
All scaffolds must be inspected before use, weekly, and after any alterations or extreme weather conditions.
Inspections must be carried out by a competent, trained person.
Any defects, damage, or missing components must be reported immediately and rectified before use.
Records of inspections must be documented and available for review.
Applying SG4-22 on Site
✅ Familiarize Yourself with SG4-22:
Understand and follow the guidelines to ensure safe scaffold erection and use.
Read updated RAMS and attend safety briefings before starting scaffold work.
✅ Implement AGR Systems:
Always use AGR when erecting and dismantling scaffolds to ensure continuous fall protection.
If AGR is unavailable, seek guidance from a supervisor before proceeding.
✅ Maintain Guardrails & Edge Protection:
Never work on an unprotected platform—both inner and outer guardrails must be in place.
If guardrails are missing or damaged, report the issue and do not proceed until it’s fixed.
✅ Use Proper Access Systems:
Only use approved ladders or staircases—never climb frames or use unsafe routes.
Ensure access points are clear, secure, and stable before use.
✅ Participate in Regular Inspections:
Report defects or hazards immediately—never assume someone else will do it.
Cooperate with safety inspections and toolbox talks to stay informed about scaffold safety.
✅ Training & Communication:
Ensure all workers involved in scaffolding understand SG4-22 and its importance.
Encourage open communication about safety concerns—speak up if you notice a hazard.
Conclusion
By following SG4-22, we can significantly reduce the risk of falls and injuries on scaffolding sites. Scaffold safety is everyone’s responsibility, and by working together, we can maintain a safe and compliant work environment. Do not take shortcuts, report hazards immediately, and always use the correct safety procedures. Your safety—and the safety of your colleagues—depends on it.
