  • Introduction
Working on a construction site requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including an EN397 industrial safety helmet, safety boots, and high-visibility vests. As a scaffolding operative, you must also wear a safety harness with an attached lanyard.

Failing to wear and correctly use your PPE not only puts your safety at risk but also endangers others around you.

At GRT, it is mandatory to wear and properly use your PPE at all times while on site. Non-compliance with this policy will constitute a violation of our Safe System of Work as outlined in the Health and Safety Policy and the site-specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

During colder months, we’ve observed an increase in workers wearing hoodies or beanie hats underneath their safety helmets for warmth. This practice compromises the fit and effectiveness of the helmet, increasing the risk of injury if the helmet dislodges and falls from height.

Wearing items such as hoodies or beanies under your safety helmet interferes with the helmet's harness and prevents it from being properly fitted, adjusted, and worn in accordance with the manufacturer’s safety standards. Additionally, a hoodie can obstruct your field of vision, increasing the likelihood of accidents by reducing awareness of oncoming plant machinery, trip hazards, or nearby workers.

    Implications
Failure to correctly wear your safety helmet may result in:

    Injury to yourself.
    Breach of site-specific RAMS.
Breach of GRT’s Health and Safety Policy.
Removal from the site and potential permanent exclusion.
    Conclusion
To ensure your safety and compliance with GRT’s Health and Safety Policy and RAMS, it is essential to wear and correctly use your PPE at all times while working on site.
