  • TOOLBOX TALK: HOT WEATHER WORKING – BRICKLAYERS & SCAFFOLDERS

Topic: Staying Safe in the Heat
    Audience: Bricklayers & Scaffolders
    Duration: 5–7 minutes
Delivered by: Supervisor or Safety Advisor

    1. Why It Matters
The hot weather is here, and while it’s tempting to strip down, working in high temperatures without the right gear can lead to serious health risks—and safety rules still apply.

    2. Hot Weather Hazards
Dehydration – sweating more than you’re drinking
Heat exhaustion – feeling dizzy, faint, or sick
Sunburn – especially neck, arms, and face
Loss of focus – increasing the chance of mistakes or accidents
    3. What You Need To Do
    HYDRATE REGULARLY

Drink small amounts of water often—don’t wait until you’re thirsty
Avoid fizzy drinks, energy drinks, and too much caffeine
    TAKE BREAKS IN THE SHADE

Rest in shaded or cool areas when possible
More breaks = safer work in hot conditions
WEAR YOUR GLOVES – MANDATORY FOR ALL

Protects hands from hot materials, sharp edges, and sunburn
Improves grip—especially when hands are sweaty
Use breathable gloves suitable for summer
TOPS MUST BE WORN UNDER HI-VIS VESTS

Bare skin under hi-vis is not allowed – sunburn risk, hygiene, and PPE compliance
    Lightweight, breathable t-shirts are ideal
    COVER UP & USE SUNSCREEN

Long sleeves can help if practical
Use factor 30+ sunscreen on exposed areas
    Reapply as directed by instructions.
KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT STRESS

    Tiredness, cramps, nausea, confusion
If you or anyone on site shows symptoms—report it straight away
    4. For Scaffolders
Keep gloves on at all times
Hot tubes and fittings can cause burns – use caution
Take care at height – fatigue increases fall risk
    5. For Bricklayers
Gloves help when handling hot bricks and tools
    Keep materials shaded when possible
Watch for faster drying of mortar in the heat
    6. Supervisors: Keep an Eye Out
Ensure water and shade are available
Monitor workers for signs of overheating
Allow flexible work times if needed – e.g., earlier starts
    7. Quick Recap
    Gloves on – always
Tops on under hi-vis – no exceptions
    Drink water regularly
    Rest in the shade
Protect your skin & know the signs
Work smart. Work covered. Work safe.
