INTRODUCTION
Many injuries are caused by slips trips and falls. In the UK a reported 33% of injuries are caused by slips, trips and falls.
SLIP
So, what actually is a slip? Well, it’s just a case of a lack of friction between 2 surfaces, your footwear and the surface you’re on, usually it is caused by contamination i.e.: mud, a chemical or other contaminate like ice.
TRIP
What actually is a trip? It is usually caused by an obstruction this could be something left by yourself or others that you inadvertently trip over normally causing you to fall forward.
FALL
A fall is defined as moving from a higher level to a lower level, rapidly without control.
(There are other definitions but relating to other topics)
FACTS
Most injuries from the slip, trips and falls can be prevented by recognising the cause of the Hazard. If in your area while you are working as a bricklayer, you’re flicking muck all over the platform you are contaminating the platform and this will result in less friction that could result in a slip.
A scaffolder leaving tubes and fittings in an untidy manner could cause a trip. Missing man hole covers or guard rails on a platform can result in a fall.
Good housekeeping is the key to the majority of prevention of slips trips and fall.
CONCLUSION
When working you need to think and plan how you’re going to work to ensure that you will always keep your working areas clean, tidy and safe.
Your access will always need to be maintained to allow you to passage through without the risk of slips, trips and falls.
Get into a routine of cleaning as you go, have a bucket or designated space for debris, put fittings straight into a sack or fitting bucket.
Housekeeping starts before the mess starts.
o Think about what you’re going to do
o How you’re going to do it
o And stick to your plan regarding housekeeping.
