Referee Grade

You are a Trainee or Level 1 referee. For you to attain your Level 2 you must achieve the Level 2 competences below.

Communication

Communication - put hand/fist up on every violation or foul call

Communication - When signalling to the scorebench they: stand still and are not too close

Rule Knowledge

Rule Knowledge -to be assessed through an exam

Anticipation and Decision Making

Anticipation and Decision Making - Make a call on all heavy contact situations that results in a player falling to the floor

Anticipation and Decision Making - Protect the dribbler by calling most fouls that affect the dribble

Anticipation and Decision Making - Protect the shooter by calling most fouls when there is contact on a shooter

Anticipation and Decision Making - Call all blatant out of bounds correctly

Anticipation and Decision Making - Call some blatant travels and double dribbles correctly

Mechanics

Mechanics - Trail referee penetrates to the free-throw line extended on every shot or drive to the basket

Mechanics - Trail referee moves to the split line to cover the far side of the court (area 3)

Mechanics - Lead referee moves as wide as the ball I.e. If the ball as near the sideline then the lead referee should be too

Mechanics - Lead referee is at least one metre past the baseline on a shot or drive in the key

Personal Qualities

Personal Qualities - Wear correct uniform. *if under 14 years of age referee to be graded towards Level 2.

You are a Level 2 Referee. For you to attain your C Grade you must achieve the C Grade competences below.

Communication

Mechanics - Make correct positioning on the court in lead

Mechanics - Make correct positioning on the court in trail

Mechanics - Know areas of responsibility for trail and lead

Personal Qualities

Personal Qualities - Wear correct uniform and 14 years of age or older

You are a C Grade referee. For you to attain your B grade you must achieve the B Grade competences below during a B grade school.

Communication

Communication - show clear and correct signals to the bench

Communication - Show good communication to players, coaches and the bench where necessary and start using preventative voice and showing skills to be able to deal with conflict

Rule Knowledge

Rule Knowledge -to be assessed through an exam

Anticipation and Decision Making

Anticipation and Decision Making - Make the correct call on all heavy contact situations

Anticipation and Decision Making - Call the majority of fouls correctly in his/ her area, in particular showing that they protect the shooter

Anticipation and Decision Making - Correctly call all out of bounds

Anticipation and Decision Making - Correctly call the majority of travels

Anticipation and Decision Making - Correctly call the majority of double dribbles

Anticipation and Decision Making - Correctly call the majority of other basic violations

Mechanics

Mechanics - Make correct positioning on the court in trail and lead and show they understand the principles of finding the gap between offence and defence

Mechanics - Show they are starting to referee off the ball and they start looking for contact on off ball screens and post play

Mechanics - Show they are calling their areas of responsibility

Personal Qualities

Personal Qualities - Wear correct uniform, be 15 years of age or older and have held C Grade for a minimum of 6 months

You are a B Grade referee. For you to attain your A grade you must achieve the A Grade competences below during an A grade school.

Communication

Communication - Show correct, clear and professional signals to the bench

Communication - Show good communication to players, coaches and the bench where necessary and show sounds use of preventative voice and skills to deal with conflict (control the game) and start looking to manage the game

Rule Knowledge

Rule Knowledge -to be assessed through an exam

Anticipation and Decision Making

Anticipation and Decision Making - Call on average 80% of fouls/ violations in his/ her area

Anticipation and Decision Making - Call block/ charge correctly applying 'FFF' principles

Anticipation and Decision Making - Apply basic advantage/ disadvantage principles where required

Anticipation and Decision Making - Understand and, where necessary, call advanced violations (goal tending, 24 shot clock)

Anticipation and Decision Making - Show they have the leadership skills to be able to control any domestic game, with any partner

Mechanics

Mechanics - Show excellent position on the court in trail and lead and show good movement to maintain the gap between offence and defence

Mechanics - Show good off the ball officiating including management of off the ball screens and post play

Mechanics - Show they are calling in their areas of responsibility

Mechanics - Start to show use of advanced mechanics including movement to area 5/6 in lead, movement across to cover the play in area 3 in trail and button hole mechanic

Personal Qualities

Personal Qualities - Wear correct uniform, be punctual to games, 16 years of age or older and have held B Grade for a minimum of 6 months

You are a domestic A Grade referee. You are expected to achieve competent at every competency skill below to be performing at the expected level.

Communication - Show good communication to players, coaches and the bench where necessary and show sounds use of preventative voice and skills to deal with conflict (control the game) and start looking to manage the game
