  • If damage is noted, notify your manager immediately so it may be taken out of service.

  • Keep arms and legs within forklift cage at all times while operating forklift.

  • Never use your cell phone while actively operating a PIV.

  • Always wear your seat belt while operating sit-down forklifts.

  • Watch when going around corners and blind spots. Use horn while driving.

  • Take turns slowly when carrying loads.

  • Always stop at intersections.

  • Drive backwards when reasonable or when your load obscures your vision.

  • Keep forks 3 to 5 inches from the ground.

  • Slowly lower the pallet to floor level before proceeding.

  • Verify pallet integrity prior to placing on shelf.

  • Slowly raise the pallet to necessary height and verify alignment before entering bay.

  • Slowly enter the bay, being mindful of everything around it. (Other pallets, shelves, and uprights.)

  • Slowly lower pallet onto the shelf, verifying that the pallet rests on both crossbeams.

  • Verify that your forks are free of the load before backing out.

  • Slowly back out of the pallet and lower your forks to floor level before proceeding.

Trailer Securement

  • Will the observed employee be working on any trailers/box trucks?

  • Employee identifies box truck/trailer is backed in

  • Bend at the knees to pull dock plate chain.

  • Employee grabs the corresponding glad hand lock or air brake lock to the matching dock to lock out the trailer

  • Employee uses man door to exit and does not jump out of dock

  • Employee secure lock out device on trailer or truck

  • Employee verifies wheels are chocked. If not chocked they place the wheel chock in front of the tires

  • Employee places key on hook or maintain control of the key throughout the loading/unloading process

  • Sound horn when exiting trailer.

  • Turn on dock light and forklift lights when in dark trailers.

  • After loading/unloading, the dock plate is popped up

  • Employee close roll up door or places chain across door

  • Employee removes lock device and places both key and device back at the designated location

Fall Protection

  • Anything over 60 pounds, team lift.

  • Lift with your legs, keep your back straight, and minimize twisting.

  • When sliding anything across the floor (tote stacks), grip the totes at a lower point and move at a reasonable speed.

  • Tote stacks should be no more than 6 feet high, and only two stacks should be moved at a time.

  • When grabbing empty pallets, use both hands and carry pallet close to your chest.

  • Ask for help if you cannot reach the top pallet in a stack.

  • Sound horn when exiting trailer.

  • Turn on dock light and forklift lights when in dark trailers.

  • After loading/unloading, the dock plate is popped up

  • Employee close roll up door or places chain across door

  • Employee removes lock device and places both key and device back at the designated location

Fall Protection

  • Will the observed employee be using any fall protection?

  • Employees must be properly trained and certified in the use of fall protection.

  • Thoroughly inspect fall protection harness prior to use.

  • Fall protection harness should be in working order and worn correctly.

  • Fall protection harness should always be 100% tied off while working at height.

Product Handling/Pallet Safety

  • Down stack loose product and re-stack any leaning composites or pallets.

  • Damaged or abnormal pallets should be replaced or placed on a stable pallet before being placed on rollers or shelves.

  • Will the observed employee be moving product on rollers?

  • Always stand at the back end of the pallet/composite whilst pushing.

  • When possible, use two people to push the pallet/composite.

  • Keep your body straight and push the pallet/composite slowly.

  • When the need arises, use a pry bar to apply leverage.

  • Keep fingers clear from underneath pallet in case the pallet rolls.

  • Will the observed employee be working in the pick rack?

  • Use a step stool to reach top shelf items, never climbing past the second shelf.

  • Fold in box flaps and throw away any trash as you are working.

  • Will the observed employee be working with rod or strut?

  • Wear cut-resistant gloves at all times.

  • Pick and move one request at a time.

  • Keep fingers clear of pinch points.

  • Use the forklift to pull or place rod and strut. Never attempt this by hand.

  • Place loose pieces back into tube or tape to another piece to keep them from shifting in transit.

  • Leave rod/strut on forks while taping or banding. Never attempt to lift.

  • Will the observed employee be working with any ladders?

  • Pull one ladder at a time.

  • Team lift for heavy or tall ladders.

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times when carrying ladders.

  • Will the observed employee be working with any kegs?

  • Wear cut-resistant gloves at all times.

  • Ask for help if the keg is too difficult to move.

  • Keep hands out from underneath keg.

  • If a keg is too heavy to lift, have a forklift driver take it to the door.

Conveyor Safety

  • Will the employee be working around any conveyor belts?

  • Always be aware of your proximity to the conveyor.

  • Be mindful of loose clothing, long hair, and jewelry when working with conveyors.

  • Never physically touch the belt while it is moving.

  • Use designated crossover points to get over the conveyor.

  • Pull emergency stop in the event of any problems stemming from the conveyor.

  • Must the observed employee clear a jam?

Clearing Jams

  • Use extreme caution when clearing jams on the conveyor.

  • Refrain from climbing on the conveyor. Use applicable tools to extend reach if necessary.

  • Call for maintenance personnel for more extensive jams or damaged parts.

  • Always verify that employees are clear before restarting the line.

Housekeeping

  • Pick up any trash and debris from floor.

  • Ensure your work area is free of trip hazards.

  • Keep food and drink in a stable and clean location.

  • Complete any assigned cleaning tasks.
