Excavation Competent Person Daily Checklist

  • Is engineering report being used (over 20 ft. in depth)?

  • Have all open trenches been inspected?

  • Has soil been classified?

  • Is sloping of trench walls being used?

  • Are slopes at proper angles?

  • Is trench box in use?

  • Is shoring in use?

  • Have utility companies been notified?

  • Are ladders or ramps in use?

  • Spoil piles located at least two feet back from the edge?

  • Loads of materials, etc. on the edge of the trench?

  • Are cracks observed along the trench?

  • Has water accumulated in the trench?

  • Any soil sloughed or caved in since yesterday?

  • Is soil layered?

  • Are there any other construction activities near the trench?

  • Is there any vehicular traffic near the trench?

  • Are there any utility lines near the trench?

Any changed conditions that effect the soil classification must be addressed and corrective action taken to protect employee safety.
