ITS Technologies & Logistics Cone Drill Process

  • INSTRUCTIONS: In an effort to reduce damage incidents that result from cranes and sideloaders coming into contact with any type of equipment, a monthly cone drill for every shift must be established at each location.

    Cone drill procedure:

    • Place a highly visible cone directly in the path of a crane or behind a sideloader being operated.
    • Cone placement must be at least 2 car lengths or 2 containers distance from operations, done in a controlled safe setting and visible to the operator.
    • Pass/fail based on the operator’s ability to identify the cone and stop safely before contact is made.
    • Each terminal should test at least one operator per shift on a monthly basis with documented testing kept in employee file.
    • While positive feedback should be given, any operators that fail to identify cone will need coaching with test results communicated to crews at shift safety briefings.

Monthly Cone Drill Process: This exercise is required to be completed at least monthly for every shift
