Signage

  • Are they labelled "not-spark proof" no flammable material to be stored?

  • Are all storage areas correctly labelled with hazard signage?

  • Are acids and alkalis segregated?

Waste Management

  • Is waste appropriately labelled?

  • Is waste segregated in accordance with University guidance?

  • Is there excessive waste within the laboratory?

  • Are bins (including sharps) and waste bottles clean, clearly labelled and within capacity?

Equipment

  • Do electrical items display an in date PAT label?

  • Is there any visible damage to the cables or equipment?

Fume Cupboards

  • Have the fume cupboards undergone statutory testing and are they in date?

  • Are all containers within the fume cupboard appropriately labelled?

  • Labelling should identify the exact contents, an owner and the date that it was created.

  • Is there any visible sign of damage?

  • Has a WREN been raised?

  • Does the light on the fume cupboard function correctly?

  • Is the fume cupboard free from clutter?

  • Is the fume cupboard operating within University guidelines (above 0.5m/s average face velocity)?

Fridges and Freezers

  • Are fridges and freezers free from clutter?

  • Is all material within appropriately labelled?

  • Labelling should detail - owner, contents, date created and a disposal date (optional)

  • Is the freezer in good condition?

  • Please liaise with Technical Services for assistance on defrosting or repair

  • Is there excessive ice build up? Are the seals damaged or distended? are shelves damaged?

  • Are fridges spark free?

  • Does the fridge display "not spark free" signage?

Gas & Cryogen Safety

  • Are all cylinders securely tethered and identifiable?

  • Are all regulators suitable, labelled and in date?

  • Are the correct gases listed on the door signage?

  • Are LN2 dewars and storage vessels in good condition?

  • Is appropriate PPE in place and in good condition?

  • Where present is gas monitoring equipment working and being maintained?

Documentation

  • Are Risk Assessments and SOPs available?

  • Have users been trained against them?

  • Have Local Rules been trained out to Lab users where applicable?

Emergency Arrangements

  • Is Diphoterine present and in date?

  • Is Hexafluorine available for Hydrofluoric Acid?

  • Are spill kits readily available?

  • Are they fully stocked and items in date if applicable?

  • Is the handwash sink labelled for handwash only and stocked with soap and paper towels?

  • Is the first aid kit stocked and in date?

  • Are fire exits clearly identified and obstruction free?

  • Is eye wash available and in date? (if applicable)
