Drill evaluation

  • A detailed briefing for Crew should be prepared covering all aspects of preparation of the collision mat drill. Drills should be conducted with the entire Crew. They can be done either when there are no Guests on board, or when Guests are on board. If conducted while Guests are on board, it may be useful to collect their comments and feedback.

  • The collision mat drill should be conducted with two key components:
    1) Firstly, inboard activities to investigate the interior of the vessel and respond accordingly.
    2) Secondly, outboard activities that will be conducted underwater by the Dive Crew and those supporting them.

  • Did the first crew member to notice the hull breach raise the alarm?

  • Did this crew member immediately advise the OOW and Chief engineer?

  • Did the officer ring the alarm?

  • Did the officer stops the vessel if underway?

  • Has the officer noted the time and location?

  • Did the Officer inform immediately the senior officer/captain?

  • Did everyone joined their station bills and/or muster?

  • Was a headcount conducted if applicable but necessary if passengers onboard?

  • Were coastguards, navy and/or local authorities contacted to report?

  • Were crew members dispatched to find the source of the breach?

  • Was the hull breach source quickly identified?

  • Were pumps immediately started?

  • Did the first Engineer or other Crew Member check the overboard discharge from the bilge pumps and the portable pumps?

  • Describe what was done onboard to patch/repair the hull breach onboard?

  • Was repair/patch equipment readily available?

  • If safe, was an in-water team ordered to get ready for outer hull inspection?

  • Was each cable checked for correct tension and secured with a pair of D-clamps?

  • Did the dive crew check regularly if the mat was still in the right position and secured?

  • Was a crew member assigned to survey the mat at all times?

  • Providing the breach was too severe, did the master prepare the passengers and crew to abandon ship?
