Administrative

Spill Kits

  • Ensure spill kits are located in areas where spills may occur (i.e. next to tanks, drums, defueling areas, fuel islands).

Fuel Tank System

  • Ensure nozzles are properly hung on dispensers.

  • If there has been a recent "drive off" ensure the breakaway is not leaking.

  • Ensure hose retractors are properly working and hoses are not touching the ground.

  • Ensure hoses are not crimped, collapsed or cracking.

  • Ensure the ATG has no alarms & is easily accessible.

  • If the dispensers DO NOT have fuel leak sensors, open each dispenser and ensure area is dry and free of debris and there are no signs of leaks.

  • Ensure proper signage is posted such as: "Smoking Prohibited", "Dispensing Into Unapproved Containers Is Prohibited", "Vehicles Must Stop During Fueling", etc.

  • Ensure the emergency shut off switch is not blocked, is clearly labeled and is within sight of all dispensers.

USTs - if applicable (Open each sump and inspect)

  • Ensure underground tank and piping sumps are dry, free of debris and there are no signs of leaks.

  • Ensure the leak detection sensor is properly mounted at the lowest point within the sump.

  • Ensure there are no cracks or holes in the bottom or sides.

USTs & ASTs - Spill buckets/Spill Box (fill ports)

  • Ensure the covers (for USTs) are color coded properly (gas=white w/black cross, vapor=orange, diesel=yellow, used oil=purple, lube oil=none, heating oil=green).

  • Ensure the fill port caps are not visibly broken and are properly secured.

  • Ensure the bucket or box is dry and free of debris and liquids.

ASTs (fuel, lube oil, used oil, etc.) & Mobile Defuelers (i.e.: Black Rhino, etc.)

  • Ensure the tank exterior and connections are free of visible leaks.

  • Ensure above ground piping is free of visible leaks.

  • Ensure the containment (diking or impounding) is free of liquid and debris. (if applicable)

  • Ensure the containment (diking or impounding) drain valve is closed. (if applicable)

  • Ensure the gauge does not indicate any liquid is in the interstitial space of the tank.

  • Ensure the tank audible alarm is working properly by pressing the test button - if equipped.

  • Ensure the fill port is closed when not being used.

  • Ensure tanks, tank supports and concrete pad are in good condition.

  • Ensure outdoor vents are covered/capped to keep rain from entering tank.

  • Ensure vent cap is free of debris such as insect or bird nests (visible from ground only).

  • Ensure all hoses and valves on defuelers are free of leaks and properly connected.

Waste management

  • Ensure any waste drums or tanks are properly labeled with their contents (i.e.: Used oil, waste oil, spill clean up, etc.).

  • Ensure waste manifests, bill of lading or other shipping documents are being retained (i.e.: used oil, used oil filters, used tires, environmental waste, etc.).
