Competency Conversation - (During the assessment, the candidate must 'demonstrate knowledge' of the following when conducting hydraulic excavator operations. You will need to have a competency conversation to assess if the Candidate has the required knowledge for this unit in order to progress to the practical assessment.)

  • complying with worksite inspection requirements

  • applying signage and barricade requirements

  • communicating and performing isolations procedures

  • identifying equipment precesses, technical capability and limitations

  • identifying, interpreting and using geological and technical date (basic)

  • being prepared for fire/accident/emergency

  • identifying signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed

  • applying site quality requirements

  • applying operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics

  • completing housekeeping activities

Practical Sign-off

  • Practical Observation Assessment - (During the assessment, the Candidate demonstrates completion of hydraulic excavator operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all the the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including the ability to:

  • PRE-START

  • Locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures

  • Conduct a pre-task JSA or Take 5 that includes an inspection of the work area

  • Conduct a pre-start check prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations.

  • Apply safe work practices and identify and report all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues.

  • Use a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

  • OPERATIONS

  • Drive and operate the excavator for operations

  • Walk the machine in a straight line

  • Conduct bucket loading and discharge

  • Side cast bulk material

  • Distribute bulk materials into materials handling equipment.

  • Conduct equipment positioning

  • Conduct jump turning the machine

  • Communicate with others in and around the trench before commencing work, during and on completion of the work

  • Adjust equipment operations to suit site conditions

  • Keep clear of obstacles and avoid running over items

  • Connect auxiliary hydraulic lines and buckets/attachments

  • Effectively use the heel of the bucket

  • POST OPERATIONS

  • Correctly shut down and park the excavator equipment

  • Maintain written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

  • Apply problem solving and troubleshooting techniques

  • Carry out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures

  • Clean the undercarriage out as needed
