Factors to consider

  • Policy P35 for Lone Workers is to be read and understood as part of the risk assessment process

  • Is the person under 18 years of age?

  • This person cannot be left to lone work without supervision.

  • Is the person expected to work alone?

  • Is this person working in a bus where associated safety controls apply? (Assault screen, CCTV, comms to depot)

  • Refer to risk assessment A6. This assessment is not appropriate for bus driving duties.

  • Is this person travelling for business purposes, alone?

  • If this person is vulnerable, suitable arrangements must be made to ensure their safety whilst travelling for business. Consider the quickest route with minimal amount of travel connections when using public transport, the time of travel should be considered and using an accommodation provider with a safety charter for lone/vulnerable travelers. Also consider lone worker App for this person.

  • Does the person have any vulnerability considerations?

  • Is the lone worker expected to carry out high risk activities such as: Hot Works, Working at Height, Confined spaces, heavy lifting, using machinery?

Summary assessment

  • Are they expected to work in a public location?

  • Are they expected to work around members of the public whilst alone?

  • Are they expected to work in high risk crime areas?

  • Are they expected to work at home and live alone?

  • Do they have an underlying health condition?

  • Are they considered vulnerable?

Controls

  • If you answered Yes to all or any of the above questions in the summary assessment section; then some or all of the following controls must be put in place based on their individual risk and needs.

  • Agree with the individual what they are comfortable with from the list below

  • Issue appropriate PPE for the task and working environment.

  • Improve site security, such as fencing, access gates, guarding.

  • Improve lighting levels

  • Improve site CCTV

  • Issue the person with the Lone workers App for welfare purposes

  • Issue the person with a panic alarm

  • Where there is a security risk issue a body cam to compliment the Lone workers App.

  • NOTE: A PIA (privacy impact assessment) GDPR assessment MUST be conducted prior to recommending and purchasing body cameras. Please contact your local data protection officer for advice. the DPO must sign this off and the HSE BP approve the request based on safety reasons.

  • Consider eliminating lone working by increasing people resource.

  • Arrange welfare checks with the individual at frequent intervals.
