Sources of fuel / ignition / oxygen

  • Is the area free from the storage of large quantities of combustible materials? i.e Paper, card, plastics etc

  • Are substantial areas of walls free from posters, notices or leaflets?

  • Are flammable materials situated and/or stored at a safe distance away from heat sources? i.e lighting, heating etc

  • Have portable appliances been tested (PAT)? N.B.Check minimum of 5 items or more where area has more than 1 room

  • Is the department free from portable heaters? N.B.There should be no portable heaters in place

  • Are medical gas valves easily accessible and free from obstruction?

  • Are gas cylinders in use or in storage?

  • If answered yes to above, are cylinders suitably stored? i.e racked or locked away

  • Do all fire hazard rooms meet current standards?

  • If answered NO to above, is there a proposed strategy in place to upgrade?

Risk to people from fire

  • Are trailing cables appropriately placed / protected to prevent crush and impact?

  • Is there a fire plan in place at the entrance to area?

  • Does the fire plan reflect the area it represents?

  • Is there a fire poster on clear display?

  • Does the fire poster reflect the area it represents?

  • Is there a record of a Fire Drill taking place within the last 12 months?

  • Is there an alternative direction of escape?

  • Are escape route(s) clearly indicated with signage?

  • Is signage universally comprehensible? i.e pictorial / directional running man

  • Are escape routes free from obstruction and combustible materials?

  • Do final exit door(s) open in the direction of escape?

  • Do final exit doors(s) open easily and without the use of a key? N.B. Check whether alarmed and request key from staff if required - open door to check ease of opening.

  • Do fire doors close fully and flush into rebate?

  • Are fire doors seen to be in the 'closed' position?

  • Are all internal fire doors clearly marked? i.e. FR30 / FR 60

  • Is the integrity of the fire doors free from any obvious signs of damage?

  • Are N2 fire action notices displayed at ALL call points?

  • Are portable fire extinguishers provided?

  • Is appropriate signage in place to indicate the type of extinguishers?

  • Are extinguishers easily accessible and free from obstruction?

  • Have checks been carried out on ALL fire fighting equipment within the last 12 months i.e portable extinguisher / fire hose / blankets

  • Are there any special evacuation aids available?

  • If answered YES to above please list what type and quantities present.

  • Have all outstanding issues from PK1/PK3 been addressed?
