Pre Brief and Knowledge

Pre Brief Knowledge and Evaluation Completion

  • Training Supplement: Discuss the content in the Training Supplement. Student can answer oral review questions from the Oral Review section

  • Notes:

  • Basic Aerodynamics: Describe the four forces, what causes lift, and what causes stalls. The student can describe stall recovery procedures and can discuss spin awareness

  • Notes:

  • Airspace: Describe airspace classes and entry requirements, special use airspace, restricted and prohibited airspace, visibility and cloud clearance requirements, and VFR departure minimums.

  • Notes:

  • Flight Plan Review: Review the completed flight plan form for the route. Confirm route matches approved solo XC route. Discuss the route and planning calculations using procedures described in the VFR Flight Planning Supplement. Discuss fuel requirements, planned fuel stops, and fuel planning calculations.

  • Notes:

  • Weather Information: Accurately interpret METAR & TAF information applicable to planned flight. Review general weather conditions, AIRMETs, SIGMETs and ForeFlight weather features and briefing feature to make a go / no-go decision. Discuss weather at each airport including winds / crosswinds for runways in use.

  • Notes:

  • Traffic Pattern Operations: Describes pattern entry and collision avoidance procedures operating in the vicinity of the XC airports. Accurately describes planned traffic pattern entries for the route based on the winds and preflight information. Has a plan prior to departure for pattern entries with appropriate contingencies.

  • Notes:

  • Landings: Describes traffic pattern operations, landing profiles, and landing procedures detailed in the appropriate training supplement as they apply to the planned flight. Can describe when and how to go-around.

  • Notes:

  • Fuel Procedures: Describes fuel required for the flight. Verifies correct total on board and chooses the correct fuel stops. Knows fueling limitations and procedures and can find fuel vendor information using ATP Airport Pages on the iPad.

  • Notes:

  • Go / No-Go Decision: Makes a go / no-go decision based on the planned conditions, airworthiness status of the airplane, weather, and other preflight planning factors.

  • Notes:

Flight Completion Standard

Flight Completion Standard

  • Ground Procedures: Completes all ground procedures, checklists, and operations accurately while maintaining situational awareness and avoiding ground / runway incursions. Has airport diagrams out and available for all airports.

  • Notes:

  • ATC Clearances & Communications: Obtains VFR flight following and reads back and complies with all ATC clearances and instructions on the ground and in flight. Communicates clearly using standard phraseology. Communicates clearly operating in and around airport traffic patterns while avoiding traffic.

  • Notes:

  • Route Navigation: Navigates along the planned route while maintaining situational awareness and avoiding traffic. Completes groundspeed calculations, time and fuel to destination calculations based on progress

  • Notes:

  • VOR Navigation: Tracks to VOR and can advise when crossing the station. Understands to/from indications. Is able to navigate along an airway using VOR navigation only (no GPS). Able to identify position using cross-radials.

  • Notes:

  • Emergency Operations: Establishes and maintains the appropriate pitch attitude and airspeed following a simulated engine failure while enroute and in the traffic pattern. Completes memory items and checklist as appropriate and chooses a suitable landing area based on conditions. Is able to use the "Nearest" feature and begin navigation to the closest airport.

  • Notes:

  • Diversion: Chooses a suitable alternate airport in scenario where planned flight can't be continued. Can begin navigation to diversion airport, discuss pattern entry, and describe why airport selected was chosen.

  • Notes

  • Traffic Pattern Operations: Plans traffic pattern entries correctly based on runways in use. Completes appropriate descent and approach checklists, and plans descents so that traffic pattern is entered correctly at the appropriate altitude. Uses standard procedures and callouts while AVOIDING TRAFFIC AT ALL TIMES.

  • Notes:

  • Landings: Completes landings using proper aileron / rudder inputs with the airplane on the centerline, at the intended touchdown point, at minimum controllable airspeed. Maintain the correct pitch attitude until reaching taxi speed. Maintains centerline until reaching a speed where adding power is required to exit the runway. Performs at least 6 landings: 3 to a full-stop.

  • Notes:

  • Go-Arounds: Demonstrates at least one go-around procedure including a closed traffic pattern to a successful landing while maintaining a safe airspeed according to the procedure listed in the supplement. Knows when a go-around is required. Demonstrates proper communications while performing a go-around.

  • Notes:

  • Checklist & Procedures: Uses the appropriate checklist and procedures throughout the flight including published approach and landing profiles found in the training supplement.

  • Notes:

Logbook Audit & Post Brief

Logbook Audit

  • Checklist & Procedures: Uses the appropriate checklist and procedures throughout the flight including published approach and landing profiles found in the training supplement.

Post Brief

  • Briefing Complete: Evaluation results summarized and shared in a conference with evaluation instructor, primary instructor, and student.

  • Notes:

  • Solo Briefing Items: Discuss solo flight briefing items with the student including advice, solo risks factors, and contingency planning for unplanned occurrences (wind changes, ATC requests, stuck at outlying field, etc.)
