Safety Guidelines

  • Follow site safety rules and your supervisor's instructions

  • Wear rubber gloves, eye protection, and long-sleeved clothing when working on battery

  • Review the system specifications, wiring diagrams, floor plans and maintenance data/manuals and NFPA 72, prior to beginning work

  • Report any problems you find

  • Notify staff prior to maintenance and testing

  • Notify staff at conclusion of maintenance and testing

Maintenance Procedures

  • Clean and inspect the fire alarm control panel battery

  • Remove dust and other contaminants from the battery and cabinet

  • Remove oxidation from the battery posts and terminals

  • Inspect the battery for corrosion, damaged components, and frayed wiring

  • Measure the voltage output of the battery for proper level

  • Visually inspect the transient voltage suppression equipment

  • Verify that power LED light is green

  • Verify that there are no control unit trouble signals

  • Check the voice/alarm communications systems if applicable. Key the microphone, and listen for a tone

  • Inspect the status of remote annunciators

  • Perform a battery load voltage test per NFPA 72

  • Perform an operational test of the fire alarm control panel

  • Bypass the signal circuits on fire alarm control

  • Simulate alarms on each zone. Check the system for proper operation including alarm signals, operation, etc

  • Restore signal circuits, and verify proper operation of all audible and visual devices

  • Check that all sub panels and slave panels are working properly and are properly interfaced

  • Perform a lamp test. Replace defective lamps. Verify functionality of LEDs

  • Verify the proper operation of system trouble signals

  • Verify proper fuse size

  • Check the disconnect switches for mechanical soundness

  • Check the ground fault circuits

  • Inspect the optical connections for defects

  • Check the wires to ensure they are securely fastened to the terminal

  • Perform a 30 minute battery discharge test

  • Measure the regulated power supply voltage

  • Submit work orders on devices not working properly
