EDGE PROTECTION

EDGE PROTECTION

  • HAZARD: Unintentional fall from the roof edge

  • Does the design of the roof provide permanent edge protection?

  • Solid parapet wall of 1100mm (Building Regs) (950mm minimum HSG33)

  • Edge protection with a top rail of at least 950mm, an intermediate guard-rail positioned so that any gap between it and other means of protection does not exceed 470mm and means of preventing materials slipping off

  • Is there evidence that edge protection is subject to scheduled regular inspection and maintenance by a competent person (at least annually) with records available?

  • Is there evidence that the roof is designed to be accessed with travel restraint or fall arrest systems?

  • Travel restraint

  • Fall arrest

  • Is there evidence that travel restriction/fall arrest system anchor points are subject to a programme of inspection, testing and maintenance?

  • Anchor devices tagged to indicate they have been tested

  • Is there evidence that contractors who could foreseeably be required to access the roof of this building have been instructed that they must submit detailed RAMS prior to authorisation?

MANAGING AND MONITORING ROOF ACCESS

  • HAZARD: Failure to manage and monitor legitimate access to the roof

  • Are adequate management procedures in place, to authorise and control, those with a legitimate need to access the roof (maintenance/inspection)?

  • Permit-to-access system - allows access only after the sharing of information between parties and formalises the authorisation process from beginning to end

  • Have suitable arrangements been made to cater for emergency out-of-hours access to the roof?

  • Contractors likely to require out of hours access have been identified and provided with relevant pre-construction information on the roof (e.g. risk assessment)
