Fire safety and emergency response

  • Evacuation routes are prominently displayed in room or nearby.

  • Doorways, walkways and evacuation exits are kept clear and at least 600mm wide.

Furniture, Fixtures and Fittings

  • Furniture is in good condition and has no sharp edges.

  • All furniture and fixtures meet Australian Childcare standards.

  • Light fittings and ceiling fans are in good working order.

  • Any stepladders have a max weight load of > 120 kg and meet Australian Standards.

  • Hanging displays are not hazardous.

  • All cupboard doors and drawers have a childproof lock.

  • There no items stored on oven tops in kitchen areas that could create a fire hazard?

Electrical

  • All unused power points have an Outlet Protector inserted.

  • Electrical equipment has been tested and tagged within past 12 months.

  • Power boards are not overloaded and no use of double adaptors.

  • All areas have Residual Current Device protection.

  • There are no power extension cords that could be a trip hazard

Storage

  • Free standing shelves/cupboards are secured to a wall to ensure stability.

  • Electronic equipment and learning resources are stored safely.

  • Storage methods are used that will eliminate or minimise accidents (heavy objects stored between mid-thigh and shoulder height).

Hazardous Substances

  • There are NO unmarked spray bottles?

  • Hazardous substances are stored and labelled appropriately.

  • Current (within 5 years) material safety data sheets are readily available for hazardous substances.

General

  • Any Sink areas are clean and in good working order with no leaks.

  • No signs of vermin have been identified.

  • Animal Cages or Fish Tanks are clean and in good condition.

  • A landline telephone is available at the Centre to call emergency services.
