SSF 008 Noise Assessmen

  • The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 require the elimination or reduction of risk to health and safety from noise at work.
To comply with exposure limits it must be ensured that operatives noise exposure, reduced by an appropriate factor if they are using personal hearing protection, is never above:

    • 87 decibels for daily (LEP,d,) or weekly (LEP,w) personal noise exposure; and
    • 140 decibels for peak sound pressure

  • N.B. It is a duty to reduce risks from noise at work to as low as is reasonably practicable at all times.

  • Lower exposure action value – daily or weekly personal noise exposure (LEP,d or LEP,w) of 80dB.

  • Upper exposure action value – daily or weekly personal noise exposure (LEP,d or LEP,w) of 85dB.

  • Peak sound pressure – these very loud 'impact noise' levels can be more damaging than the daily / weekly noise exposures and present a risk of immediate and permanent hearing loss. The lower and upper action values for these are 135 and 137 dB (LCpeak) respectively. Damage caused by them will be in addition to any damage resulting from the daily / weekly noise burden.

  • Whenever an initial noise assessment reveals noise exposure limit being reached the site supervisor must make a full assessment to evaluate noise control measures to be applied.

Initial Noise Assessment (refer below for guidance on noise levels)

  • How loud is the noise?

  • Probable level is 80db. The daily exposure limit is 7 hours without PPE. Control Measures: Site Supervisor Toolbox Talk, provide PPE (ear defenders).

  • Probable level is 85db. The daily exposure limit is 2.5 hours - no PPE or 7 hours with PPE. Control Measures: Site Supervisor Toolbox Talk. Establish hearing protection zone Mandatory PPE (ear defenders).

  • Probable level is 90db. The daily exposure limit is 45 minutes - no PPE or 7 hours with PPE. Control Measures: Site Supervisor Toolbox Talk. Establish hearing protection zone Mandatory PPE (ear defenders).

  • Excavator & Pulveriser: at 1m 75db, at 2m 70db

  • Excavator & Breaker: at 1m 90db, at 2m 85db

  • Compressor & Breaker: at 1m 90db, at 2m 85db

  • Disc Cutter (when cutting): at 1m >100db, at 2m 95db

Site Supervisor Sign-Off
