Hazard Identification

  • Contact with electricity or electrical discharge?

  • Control Measures - Trained and experienced engineers only. Lock out procedure must be employed when necessary. Barriers must be in place for pedestrians. Safety signage must be used. Lead engineer responsible.

  • Working in confined spaces?

  • Control Measures - No persons to work in confined spaces as described by the Confined Space Regulations. A separate RA must be completed.

  • Manual handling weights over 25kg?

  • Control Measures - Specific manual handling RA must be in place for weights over 25kg

  • Exposure to hazardous substances? Including paint.

  • Control Measures - Comply with requirements of COSTA assessments. Use correct PPE where identified. Do not eat or drink whilst working.

  • Falling objects from height

  • Control Measures - Clear area and barrier off. Cranes to be used by trained personnel.

  • Slips, Trips and Falls

  • Control Measures - Keep work area tidy. Have all swarf removed prior to commencing work. Identify where trailing cables are a risk.

  • Control Measures - Have work area cleaned out prior to commencing work. Wear appropriate PPE.

  • Control Measures - Full PPE must be worn. Minimum 2 personnel when operating. Barrier to be put in place in front and behind fixing wall. No staff or public within 10 meters of work area.

  • Use of hand tools

  • Control Measures - Wear appropriate PPE when using hand tools. Especially gloves when using saws or sharps.

  • Possibility of moving machinery

  • Control Measures - Area to be barriered off. Machinery to be worked on only by competent, trained personnel. Use safety signs where required. Do not leave unattended.

  • Use of power tools

  • Control Measures - Wear appropriate PPE when using drills or any power tools especially safety glasses when there is a risk of debris.

  • Lone working

  • Control Measures - Do not work on equipment if alone in the factory.

  • Exposure to asbestos

  • Control Measures - If asbestos is suspected, remove in the correct manner and add to the asbestos register. Arrange collection by the appropriate authorities.

  • Working with MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform)

  • Control Measures - MEWP to be checked as per checksheet. To be used by trained, competent personnel. Area to be barriered off. If outside a safe wind speed should be measured using an anemometer. Verify recommended wind speed.

  • Lock out procedure required

  • Control Measures - Follow safe isolation procedures and shut off power at the main power isolator and padlock it. Keep key on your person at all times. Test circuit before working on it. Strictly no lone working.

  • Use of ladders, scaffolding etc.

  • Control Measures - Appropriate control measures to be taken. Equipment must be tagged correctly as per current colour coding. Barriers to be used.

  • Working on the roof

  • Control Measures - Appropriate harness should be worn. Wind speed checks to be carried out using an anemometer. Risk assess safe wind speed for activity being undertaken. Refer to HSE document number HSG33
