WAH ASSESSMENT-refer to ICOP for guidance (summarised below)
-
The ICOP Guidance from the Health and Safety Executive for Tree Climbing states:
Climbing work with a personal fall protection system - ropes and harness - can only be done if:
- A risk assessment has shown that the work can be done safely while using that system, and
- The use of other, safer work equipment (eg mobile elevating work platforms) is not justified, and
- The user and a sufficient number of available people have received training specific to the task, including rescue techniques. -
Work from ground (Low Risk) can the work be safely carried out from the ground?
-
Is work from a MEWP appropriate?
-
Why is a MEWP inappropriate?
- Unstable/soft ground conditions
- Inadequate access/road width
- Services close/present
- Insufficient working space aerial or ground
- Disproportionate cost
-
Ropes and Harness access (High Risk)
-
Have all possible alternatives to climbing been considered?
-
Only climb if absolutely necessary.
-
Is the tree safe to climb?
-
DO NOT CLIMB: Please contact team leader or manager for advice!

Rescue
-
All employed staff are qualified to carry out aerial rescue. To be able to carry out a rescue each staff member must have appropriate climbing kit, including SPIKES. Rescue on a pole cannot be carried out effectively or quickly without spikes. Kit should be available for rescue at the bottom of each tree being climbed (in addition to the climber's own kit). Please ensure that rescue kit is available for each climber.
-
Is there an issue which prevent someone from being able to carry out a rescue? (eg lack of kit, injury, etc)
-
Please give details of who and why.
-
Are there still enough people on site capable of carrying out a rescue for the work to continue?
-
Contact team leader or manager to discuss alternatives.
-
Has rescue kit been placed near to hand for each climber? (near the tree but out of harms way)
-
Has the rescue scenario been considered for each tree?
-
Please take time to consider how a rescue might be carried out in each scenario (for each climber). Installing a throw line can speed up rescue process if it is required, or whichever system seems most appropriate.
-
