  • Does the hazard board or any other signage accurately reflect what is happening on site?

  • Has contractor been inducted to the TDE H&S site plan by the foreman?

  • Is the contractor's work area set up safely and kept tidy (as far as is reasonable)?

  • Are TDE workers working with the contractor? i.e. are they involved with the contractor task?

  • Have TDE workers identified and documents the risks and controls for the task being carried out with the contractor? I.e. Site-specific SWMS done, or task specific risks and controls documented on the Daily H&S plan, TDE workers inducted into contractor SWMS/TA or similar.

  • Is the contractor adequately trained or certified, and/or supervised for their work as required? Request records/evidence.

  • Is the contractor able to tell you (verbally or in writing), what their critical risks are? (ensure they are aware of health, as well as safety, risks)

  • Is the contractor able to tell you what controls they've put in place to manage their risk, and justify their control selection? i.e. are the controls the most effective reasonably practicable?

  • Do contractor workers know where the emergency assembly point is?

Plant/Machinery/Equipment

  • Is contractor plant / machinery fit-for-purpose?

  • Doe contractor plant/machinery appear to be in safe working order (to the best of your knowledge)?

  • Do all guards and safety devices appear to be in place and functioning (to the best of your knowledge)? E.g. attachment locking pins, guards/shields, emergency stops/dead-man-switch, Operator Protective Structures (OPS) on mobile plant, safety belts, extraction systems, warning alarms etc.

  • Are contractor plant/machinery items warranted, certified, tested etc. as required?

  • Are contractor workers maintaining a safe position and distance from mobile plant / raised booms?

  • Do contractor electrical items have current tags?

Hazardous Substances

  • Does the contractor have a hazardous substances inventory?

  • Does the contractor have current SDS readily available for all their hazardous substances?

  • Are contractor hazardous substances stored in the correct containers and clearly and accurately labelled?

  • Are contractor hazardous substances stored safely? E.g. isolated from unauthorised access, properly contained to prevent them from being released accidentally into the environment, away from incompatibles or ignition sources etc.

  • Are contractor workers aware of the risks posed by the hazardous substances they are working with, and the controls required? E.g. can they describe them to you?

  • Do contractor workers have the necessary training and competency to handle hazardous substances as required?
