SMOKING

  • Any evidence of smoking in unauthorized areas?

  • Are the designated smoking areas free of trash accumulation both inside and outside?

FIRE EQUIPMENT

  • Has all the fire equipment (extinguishers, hoses, etc.) tagged and inspected?<br>(Monthly and Annually)

  • Is there easy access to the fire equipment?<br>(Ensure manual pull-stations, exit signs, alarm bells or horn/strobes, and fire extinguishers are not blocked or covered up, and all the fire extinguishers hung up)

  • Are all hose stations in good repair?<br>(Ensure the hose station isn't blocked, the hose should be rolled and the hose nozzle operates easily and is not closed tight. Plastic hose nozzles that are left closed tight can jam and break when they expand as the plant heats up) Hoses must be replaced every 5 years.

  • Can the evacuation alarm be heard in all normally occupied locations?

SPRINKLERS

  • Are the storage areas and partitions at least 18" below sprinklers?<br>(Check any new walls)

  • Are sprinklers clear from items hanging from them such as signs / banners?<br>(since the last visit)

  • Are sprinkler heads clean and unpainted?

FLOORS / WALLS

  • Are aisles the proper width? <br>(Feeder aisles shall be 36" wide minimum and main aisles shall be 43" wide minimum)

  • Are cable penetration seals intact?

  • Are fire walls intact with no holes in them?

  • Are stairwells clear of any storage or equipment?

  • Are doors cleared of snow or ice so they can open properly?<br>(all exiting doors)

  • Is the emergency lighting aimed to light up the floor path to an exit? <br>(look at where the lights are aimed and report any that don't appear to be aimed properly)

  • Are extension cords in good condition?

  • Are extension cords being used properly?<br>(are they laying on the floor creating a tripping hazard?)

  • Are all the ceiling tiles in place?<br>

OFFICES / ROOMS

  • Do all fire doors close and latch without help? Or is there a fusible link?<br>(You can determine if the door is a fire door by looking for a label on the hinge edge of the door (Belledune doors are not labelled on the edge). Fire doors are labeled as such on the face of the door. Fire doors are not to be blocked open. Throw all door wedges away)

  • Are Electrical, Relay and DCS rooms clean and not used as storage areas?

  • Are portable heaters in offices used properly?<br>(The heaters should be stable on the floor with no storage around them, do they have tip over protection? Heaters shall be CSA approved. Kettles and toaster ovens as well.)

  • Are garbage cans, recycle bins or storage areas not overflowing?<br>(Report any garbage cans, recycle bins or storage areas that are overflowing. Garbage cans should be metal with a cover.)

  • Is the electrical equipment in the coal handling areas listed as Class 2 Div. 1?<br>(No cheater cords)

CHEMICALS / FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS

  • Are flammable liquids stored in an oil room or a flammable liquids room?<br>(Depending on the nature of the product. Only products that are class 2 or higher, flash point of 104F or higher, can be stored in the oil rooms)

  • Are the compressed gas cylinders secured upright using non-combustible methods such as a chain? Rope is not allowed.<br>(Propane cylinders in use are limited to a 20lb BBQ size bottle. If more than one bottle is required they should be at least 100 feet apart. No cylinders shall be stored in the plant. They shall be brought in as required when needed. Hydrogen cylinders for generator gas make up shall be limited to 11 total for each unit. This includes those manifold and separate spars.)

  • Are all oxidizers stored away from oils and greases?<br>(Oxidizers have a yellow rectangle with the number 5 (5.1 or 5.2) on them. Usually this is fibreglass resin.)

  • Do the salamander propane heaters have a bar on the outlet to prevent storage of items too close to the discharge?

  • In the stores gas bottle storage area - Is the oxygen separated from all fuel gas and H2 by 20 ft or a steel wall that prevents line of sight between the cylinders?

  • Are waste oil and lower flash point liquids such as varsol and acetone stored in metal drums?<br>(Waste oil barrels must have self closing fusible link funnels.)

  • Are the oil soaked speedy dry cleaned up and disposed of in rag bins or outside the building?<br>(The oil soaked speedy dry burns as easily as oil itself.

  • Are proper ULC listed rag bins available for used oily rags?<br>(Clean bins daily)

  • Are flammable liquids being handled in approved ULC listed metal containers?<br>(Small quantities of make up lube oil are permitted to be in plastic containers.)

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Are the large (500 ft or larger) tarps or plastic shrouding fire retardant?<br>(Especially is left for long periods of time.)

  • Are wood pallets stored outside?<br>(If inside they shall be limited to 6 ft high in a sprinklered area.)

  • Are large quantities of scaffolding wood (particularly plywood) stored outside?<br>(Large quantities should not be stored inside unless the storage piles are small and well separated. Scaffolding wood should be painted with a fire retardant coating, particularly if it's used in boilers, condensers or hydro unit hubs or other confined spaces or restricted egress areas.)

  • When doing HOT WORK, is there a yellow hot work tag and the 10 items listed on the back of the tag addressed?
