Safety checking of Descender, Ascender & Karabiner equipment in accordance with AS 1891

General condition of Descender / Ascender

  • ID number and rating present

  • Alignment of body,(no twisting or buckling)

  • Wear on body - wear indications

  • Sharp edges

  • Wear on cams and brake posts

  • Brake mechanism operates correctly

  • Rivets and screws secure

  • Item is free from corrosion, dirt, rust or other obstructions

  • Check the shock load indicators for any sign that a fall has occured

Function Test is crucial when inspecting and deeming a decent / ascent device fit for service

  • Check ability to brake on the rope (hold weight of the operator)

General condition of Karabiners

All connectors must be: rated to a minimum of 15kN for fall arrest, minimum double action

  • Sharp edges

  • Wear at swivel and latch pivot points

  • Gate function

  • Broken, weak or misplaced latch springs

  • Locking mechanism operates correctly

  • Item is free from corrosion, dirt, rust or other obstructions
