Section 2: VOC Assessment Practical Component

  • Checks driver’s bag has appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required; selects and wears the PPE for hazards and weather conditions.

  • Performs pre-start checks on the truck and gear in accordance with Veolia check sheets. Completes safety walk around inspection.

  • Can describe how the DVR (Defective Vehicle Register) system functions and list the information it requires.

  • Demonstrates use of operating controls and safe operation of the Lifting Arms and Forks and can describe the hazards of this operation.

  • Can state the height clearances of equipment; ensures Arms are correctly positioned for safe road travel.

  • Wears seatbelt at all times when driving, understands Veolia policy on seatbelts. Demonstrates 3 point dismount from vehicle.

  • Can state the average walking speed (8 kph) and describe the requirements of safe travel in high risk areas: shopping centres, car parks. Can state Veolia site rules relating to speed, parking, cleaning of truck.

  • Positions the vehicle well, considers the right location and approach to perform the service; demonstrates awareness of overhead power lines separation distances (i.e.1200mm no exceptions) and can describe general positioning hazards: forks through pockets into walls, pushing bins into other items, rolling bins and locking castors.

  • Visually assesses the work area before flipping bin, identifying any hazards; can describe what to do if Dangerous Goods or Hazardous Substances are seen in bin before loading, or after, if smelt or seen while tipping.

  • Demonstrates use of mirrors and reverse cameras effectively to position truck.

  • Demonstrates the safe operation of the Blade Packer.

  • Demonstrate the safe operation of cleaning out behind the Blade Packer (sumping out): including wearing of PPE, cleaning hands afterwards, using ladder safely i.e. 3 point dismount.

  • Demonstrates the safe operation of the Eject Blade and Tipping Body.
