Site Entrance and Site Security

  • Does the site have adequate safety signage displayed at front gate?

  • Is the signage visible to everyone coming onto site?

  • Is the car park suitable for purpose and in a good state of repair? Is all lighting working, adequate parking bays,etc

  • Is the ground surface in a good state of repair slip, trips or fall hazards controlled?

  • Is the adequate security in place to prevent unauthorised access to premises?

  • Is there adequate separation of pedestrians and vehicles?

  • Is all perimeter fencing where unauthorised access would be possible secure and undamaged?

  • Is there a safe pedestrian route to allow drivers to report for instructions when visiting site?

Main Yard

  • Are there adequate number of parking spaces for all units?

  • Does the yard have adequate and sufficient safety signage clearly displayed?

  • Is there a properly designed one way system used on vehicle routes where this can be achieved?

  • Do drivers drive with care, use correct traffic routes, drive within speed limit, and follow any other site rules? Spend some time observing.

  • Is there adequate separation of pedestrians and vehicles?

  • Is housekeeping of a good standard throughout all outside areas?

  • Is there sufficient lighting in all outside areas?

  • Are slip, trips and fall hazards adequately dealt with in all outside areas?

  • Is there an adequate COSHH management system in place with relation to use of LPG and diesel, AD Blue, COSHH training, COSHH cupboard, visible COSHH assessments posted, adequate PPE etc, where required?

Loading and Unloading

  • Are loading and unloading operations carried out in a controlled area away from passing traffic and pedestrians?

  • Are vehicles braked and/or stabilised, as appropriate to prevent unsafe movements during loading and unloading in compliance with company's SOP?

  • Are loading and unloading activities carried out on ground that is flat and free from potholes?

  • Are drivers kept in a safe place away from the vehicle whilst loading/unloading takes place? If not how are they controlled?

  • Is there a traffic management system in place to ensure the trailer is not moved until it is safe to do so stop signs, key box etc?

  • Is there a safe area marked out where drivers can observe loading if necessary?

  • Is the loading/unloading carried out so that, as far as possible the load is spread evenly to avoid the trailer becoming unstable?

  • Is there sufficient lighting in area where loading/unloading is taking place?

  • Has the need for drivers or shunters to go onto the trailer whilst loading been eliminated where possible and if not is safe access provided?

  • Is manual handling controlled and reduced as much as is practicable in loading and unloading activities?

Warehouse Area

  • Are exits clearly marked and clear of obstructions?

  • Are fire extinguishers accessible in all warehouse areas?

  • Are all fire alarm activation points in warehouses clear from obstruction?

  • Are all fire exits in warehouse areas clearly marked, suitably illuminated and free from obstruction?

  • Are the warehouse aisles clear of storage?

  • Are pallets, racks and shelving in good condition, undamaged?

  • Are materials stacked properly, not leaning?

  • Are materials secure and not leaning off the edge of racks?

  • Is housekeeping of a good standard throughout the warehousing area?

  • Is manual handling controlled and reduced as much as possible in the warehousing area?

  • Have slip,trips and fall hazards been controlled in the warehouse areas?

  • Are FLT's observed to be operated safely and sensibly? Spend some time observing this.

  • Is there an adequate COSHH management system in place in the warehouse? COSHH training, COSHH cupboard, visible COSHH assessments posted, adequate PPE etc

Office Area

  • Are good housekeeping standards maintained in all office areas?

  • Are all fire exits and exit routes in office areas clearly marked, suitably illuminated and free from obstruction?

  • Are all fire alarm activation points in offices clear from obstruction?

  • Are fire extinguishers accessible in all office areas?

  • Has ergonomics been taken into account in the design of employees work spaces and have employees undergone training to ensure they understand the premise of good ergonomics?

  • Is all electrical cabling safely stored no trailing cables on floors etc?

  • Is floor surface in good condition?

  • Electrical equipment appears in good condition? no exposed wiring, cords with frayed or deteriorated insulation.

Workshop Area

  • Is access to the workshop restricted or greatly reduced to essential personnel only?

  • Are all walkways clear of obstructions and slip, trip and fall hazards?

  • Are fall restraint systems in place and used when working at height is taking place?

  • Are the perimeter of work pits clearly marked to reduce risk of injury due to falls?

  • Are work pits covered when not in use?

  • Is there an adequate COSHH management system in place in the workshop? COSHH training, COSHH cupboard, visible COSHH assessments posted, adequate PPE etc

First a Aid

  • Are first aides clearly identified on signage?

  • Are there a suitable number of first aid points on site, are they clearly identified and suitably stocked?

  • Are there a suitable number of first aiders for the number of employees on site?

Fire Safety

  • Does the site have an up to date Fire Risk Assessment in place?

  • Is fire alarm tested weekly and is this documented?

  • Are all extinguishers tagged and serviced?

  • Are fire extinguishers accessible in all high risk areas of the site LPG tank and diesel tanks areas etc?

  • Are fire assembly points clearly marked and in a suitable position?

  • Fire doors in all areas remain shut and capable of unhindered exit by push mechanism?

  • Is smoking prohibited everywhere apart from designated smoking areas?

  • Is the designated smoking area separate from the main working area and away from possible hazards?

Welfare Facilities

  • Does the site have suitable amounts of toilets for size of the site and the number of employees?

  • Does the site have sufficient designated male and female toilets?

  • Are all toilets in a good clean condition?

  • Are there suitable and sufficient washing facilities and changing rooms available on site sufficient for the number of staff on site, close to toilet areas, hot and cold water, soap included, good clean condition?

  • Are there suitable and sufficient locker rooms available to all staff that require them?

  • Is the canteen area clean and in good condition and suitable and sufficient for the size of the work force?

  • Are fire extinguishers accessible in canteen areas?
