General Site Security

Fencing & Site Perimeter

  • Is site shared with other businesses within same perimeter fence?

  • Is fencing in good condition, of sufficient height to prevent unauthorised entry, and topped with 3 layers of barbed wire (or equivalent) around entire perimeter?

  • Is site secured by an effective electric fence (where high risk stock is present)?

  • Are all gates securely locked when not in use?

  • Is any stock or valuable property known to be left outside of building and unattended at any time?

  • Stock or other property is at high risk of theft or damage. It is recommended it be kept inside secured premises when unattended.

  • Is pedestrian access to the site appropriately restricted (where applicable)

  • Is vehicle access to the site appropriately restricted (where applicable)

  • Is there adequate signage internally / externally warning of alarms and cameras?

Physical Security of Buildings

  • Are all buildings structurally secure, including walls, roofs, doors and windows?

  • Are there adequate restrictions on access to receiving and dispatch docks?

  • Are all doors and windows able to be securely locked?

  • Were any doors found unlocked which should have been locked?

  • Does site have a currently registered restricted key system, and an updated record of all keys and key-holders?

  • There is a strong possibility of unauthorised access to the site. It is strongly recommended that consideration be given to installing a new restricted key system as soon as possible!

  • Are any keys unaccounted for, which would allow the holder access to stock?

  • Where site has electronic locks on some doors, are adequate controls in place to ensure only authorised personnel have access, and is an updated register held of all current authorised personnel?

Security Alarms

  • How comprehensive is security alarm detection?

  • Are high risk areas (tobacco, liquor, cash office) adequately covered by additional alarm detection?

  • Are refrigeration failure alarms installed, monitored, and working (where applicable), and are key-holders notified of alarms in a timely and satisfactory manner?

  • Where applicable, are all emergency exits fitted with audible alarms?

  • When was security alarm last fully tested?

  • To ensure alarm system is functioning properly it is essential that it is tested at least every 6 months.

  • Are alarm users kept up to date (and deleted if a user leaves the business) and is State Security Manager kept informed of such changes?

  • Are all alarm users fully competent in the lock and unlock procedures for the site and aware of their responsibilities?

  • Are all alarm users aware of the voice code and its function, and has the voice code been changed since an alarm user last left the business?

  • Does the alarm monitoring company have up to date details of 3 after hours contacts, and are these personnel trained in how to respond to alarms?

  • Does the alarm monitoring company have up to date alarm response instructions and are these still relevant?

  • Does the alarm monitoring method and reporting meet acceptable security standards?<br>(Minimum GPRS / wireless monitoring with 90 second polling. 2-path monitoring preferred).

  • Are duress buttons fitted (where risk exists), have they been tested less than 6 months ago, and are all applicable personnel trained in their use?

  • Is the date and time kept up to date in the alarm panel?

  • Have all alarm backup batteries been tested and replaced as necessary?

  • How often do false alarms occur?

  • Is there an updated zone list and building plan located on the site?

  • Are there any known faults with the alarm system?

Surveillance Cameras

  • Is a surveillance camera system installed at the site?

  • Do security cameras cover main entry points and high risk areas, and is the system of sufficient quality for business needs (ease of use and image quality).

  • In the event of a break-in at night or power failure, would there be adequate lighting for cameras to obtain evidence, or are day/night cameras in use?

  • Consider leaving minimum lighting on at night.

  • Does the recorder store footage for a minimum of 30 days as per Metcash standards?

  • Is the date and time on the recordings correct (and updated when there are time changes)?

  • In the event of a serious incident, this is necessary for evidentiary purposes.

  • Is the recorder kept in a secured location to protect it from malicious damage?

  • Does the surveillance system have working backup power so it could still operate if mains power failed?

  • Are there any known faults with the surveillance system?

High Risk Stock

  • Does the site hold stock of tobacco products?

  • Are all tobacco products kept in a well secured location, and is access to this area restricted to only those staff who are authorised?

  • Does the site hold stock of alcohol products?

  • Are all alcohol products contained within a secured building, and is access to this stock restricted to authorised personnel (where applicable)?

Cash Management

  • Does the site hold cash in excess of $200?

  • Is all cash kept in appropriately secured location(s), where only authorised personnel have access?

  • Has safe combination been changed in the last 6 months, and since an employee with its combination last left the business?

  • Safe combination should be changed as a matter of high priority!

Staff & Contractors

  • When was security related training / information last provided to staff?

  • Do all staff keep their personal belongings in lockers

  • How often are employee bag / locker security checks carried out

  • Have there been any security problems with contractors in the last 6 months?

  • Have there been any security breaches by employees in the last 6 months?

  • Have there been any other significant security incidents in the last 6 months?

Guards & Patrols

  • Are security officers on duty during site operating hours

  • Who employs these security officers?

  • What hours are security officers on duty at the site, and how many of them?

  • Are the security officers providing satisfactory service?

  • Do security officers patrol the premises after hours?

  • Which company supplies the patrols?

  • Are they providing satisfactory service?

Miscellaneous Security Issues

  • Are there any other security issues at the site which need attention?

  • Please describe these issues, and what actions are recommended to address them.

Big Box Stores

Staff Training & Awareness

  • Are staff near the customer entrance alert and greeting customers on entry?

  • Are staff working in the aisles alert and offering assistance to customers?

  • Do all staff know what to do if they suspect a customer may be shoplifting?

Tobacco Cage

  • At the time of audit, how was the tobacco cage found

Checkouts and Cash Handling

  • Are staff working on the checkouts alert and checking customers bags, trollies etc appropriately?

  • Have all checkout staff been trained in how to prevent robberies, and how to behave should one occur?

  • Do all checkout staff have adequate knowledge and awareness of possible customer fraud (counterfeit cash, credit cards etc) and what steps they should take to prevent it?

  • Are cash drop procedures being followed? (Carry out a float check on a random checkout).

  • Are all checkouts adequately secured when not in use (as observed at time of audit)?

Information Security

  • How securely is customer information stored and handled (especially credit card details)

  • How satisfied is site management that all passwords and security codes are being securely used by all relevant employees, and not shared? <br>* This applies to any passwords including those for alarms, safes, electronic locks, and computer systems).

  • Is access to pricing and labelling items appropriately restricted to only authorised personnel?

Out of Trading Hours

  • Are the customer entry and exit doors, and carpark entry gates secured immediately after store closes?

  • Do supervisors always check the entire store at closing time to ensure there can be no customers left in the store?

Speciality Retail Stores

Staff Awareness & Training

  • Did all employees appear alert and attentive to customers at time of audit?

  • Have all employees been trained in prevention and management of robbery?

  • How long ago did this training last take place?

Loss Prevention Measures

  • Is stock merchandising done effectively to minimise theft?

  • Are there always 2 or more employees in the store, especially when store is being closed?

  • One employee alone on site increases the risk of robbery and staff theft.
    Wherever practicable, it is recommended at least 2 employees be on duty, especially in the evening and at closing time.

  • Are cash handling procedures followed correctly to minimise the possibility of theft? by staff or customers?
