Workplace Inspection

Workshop Access & Egress

  • Are designated walkways clearly marked? (E.g. Paint is not faded or missing)

  • Are aisles & walkways free of obstructions?

  • Is there clear access to electrical switchboards?

  • Is there clear access to all emergency equipment?

  • Are advisory signs (traffic direction, speed limit, parking areas, restricted areas, PPE etc) visible and in good condition?

  • Floors have an even, unbroken and slip resistant surface that is reasonably free of indentations or other obstructions that could cause a person to trip or slip.

Emergency Equipment

  • Fire equipment is in place, in good condition and clearly marked?

  • Are test tags on portable fire extinguishers current? (Sample only – inspections are on a 6 monthly test frequency)

  • Are emergency showers and eyewash stations working? (A functional check is required)

  • Are emergency lights (green light over safety shower) & emergency exit lights operating?

Fire Prevention

  • Are waste materials removed on a regular basis?

  • Are flammable materials kept, and handled in a manner that minimizes the risk of fire?

  • Are flammable liquids kept in purpose built storage cabinets which are grounded to prevent static sparking?

  • Are fixed fire systems (fire hose reels at either end of the workshop) checked/monitored periodically? (A functional check is required)

  • Fire Extinguishers in place? Inspection in date? (record date in comments)

Amenities (crib room)

  • Is there reasonable access to toilets which are clean and functional? (Females are provided with adequate & hygienic sanitary disposal)

  • Is there reasonable hand washing facilities which have hot and cold water and are they kept clean and functional?

  • Do all workers have access to chilled drinking water?

  • Do workers have reasonable access to hygienic facilities for eating meals?

  • Are lighting levels sufficient for the tasks carried out?

Buildings & Workshops

  • Are all external pathways free of tripping hazards?

  • Are all external pathways well drained to prevent pooling of water?

  • Are all external steps and changes of level clearly delineated?

  • Is external lighting adequate & operational?

  • Is their evidence of a vermin or pest control program in place where required?

  • Are HV access roads, carpark and pedestrian walkway signs & markings easily seen and understood?

Electrical

  • Are 240v plugs, sockets, leads and switches in good condition?

  • Do all electrical leads and appliances have test tags attached which are within their test date? (Sample only)

  • Have new appliances that were introduced since last inspection been tagged?

  • Are electrical leads clear off the floor and or kept clear of walkways?

  • Are their sufficient power outlets available to limit the over-use of electrical power boards?

  • Are power- boards used in preference to double adapters?

  • Are flexible electrical leads kept clear from wet areas?

  • Are electrical circuits protected by fixed RCD’s at switchboard?

  • Are portable RCDs used where no fixed RCD is installed?

  • Are faulty electrical equipment items tagged out of service?

Housekeeping

  • Are bins and storage facilities provided in close proximity to work areas?

  • Is there a cleaning program in place to ensure the work area and facilities are maintained in a clean and hygienic condition?

  • Are covered rubbish bins available?

  • Are there spill containment kits / facilities in place which are located in close proximity to where spills are likely to occur?

Manual Handling - Storage

  • Are frequently used items stored within easy access? (between knee & shoulder)

  • Are heavy items that are manually handled stored at waist height?

  • Are stored or stacked items positioned in a way that will prevent them from falling?

  • Are mechanical aids - Available? Applicable to the task? In good condition?

  • Is a ‘Safe-step’ or step ladder available to access small items stored on high shelves?

Hazardous Chemicals

  • If new workplace chemicals were introduced since the last inspection: Has the chemical been added to the hazardous chemical register?

  • Has the chemical been formally risk assessed?

  • Is the chemical stored in accordance with its SDS?

  • Are hazardous substance storage cabinets correctly labelled?

  • Are de-cantered hazardous chemicals correctly labelled?

  • Are Safety Data Sheets (SDS) easily available and within date? (5 years from date of print)

  • Is a Hazardous Chemical Register easily available to all workers?

  • Are incompatible dangerous goods not co-located within the same storage cabinet?

Workshop Plant - Welders/Gas Cutting Equipment/Forklift/Pallet Jack/Mobile Hoists etc.

  • Are Safe Work Instructions (SWIs) visible/accessible, up to date and correct?

  • Are plant pre-start inspection sheets being completed daily (or as specified)?

Metro Company Vehicles

  • Are company vehicles being regularly inspected using form the correct Vehicle Pre-start Inspection Report

  • Vehicle Pre-start Inspection Report being filled in correctly?

Notices and Signs

  • Is safety and general signage posted and clearly visible?

Environmental
