GSE (HiLift truck) Aircraft Interface Checklist

  • To ensure that ground handling equipment are guided safely, when approaching/leaving an aircraft.

  • On arriving aircraft, all GSE Catering Hi-lift Truck(s) and Catering Attendant Driver(s) and Catering Attendant(s) must remain behind ramp safety lines and clear of propellers, engine inlet and exhaust until the aircraft has come to a complete stop, anti-collision beacons switched-off, engines shut down, in case of propellers-stop turning, wheels chocked, and okay given (THUMPS UP APPROVAL) by engineers to approach the aircraft. When approaching the circle of safety, All Catering Attendant Driver(s) on duty must always proceed with caution and drive not faster than walking pace.

  • The Catering Attendant(marshaller) to position at the AFT/MID/FWD aircraft service door with the use of marshalling wands.

  • GSE HiLift operator to follow the guidance of the marshaller refer to GSE marshalling signs worn in. The Catering attendant (marshaller) to apply a complete stop sign prior GSE Hi Lift entering ERA or 5 meters from aircraft this area. The Catering attendant (marshaller) to continue the guidance of the GSE Hi Lift truck towards the aircraft. The Catering attendant (marshaller) to apply complete STOP sign 2 meters from the aircraft. The Catering attendant (marshaller) to continue the GSE Hi Lift marshalling until the Catering GSE/Hi Lift Truck(s) come to a complete stop at a distance no less than 12" from the Marshaller (Catering Attendant).

  • Marshalers (Catering Attendant) after aligning themselves with the aircraft door, must take a step forward away from the aircraft and towards the hi-lift before initiating the forward movement signal until final stop. The GSE operator to place gear selector into neutral position and apply handbrakes while depressing the foot brakes and marshaller to chock the front wheel (one chock placed in front and one chock at the back of the same wheel). The GSE Marshaller to conduct precise GSE marshalling. GSE operator must fully comply with the marshaller guidance. Only trained marshaller to conduct GSE marshalling.

  • The GSE Catering Driver to activate the PTO switch The Catering Driver/Catering Attendant as marshaller will activate the switch to deploy the stabilizers to fully contact the tarmac ensure the lights for full stab down are activated/illuminated.

  • The Catering Attendant (marshaller) will wait for security screening and verification of the seal. Once the seal is verified by the security The security seal will be broken by the security and clearance for the Catering attendant to enter the Hi Lift truck (applicable to Fiji Airways /Fiji Link aircrafts). The Catering Attendant(marshaller) will open the rear shutter to enter the GSE Hi Lift and close and secure the shutter. The Catering Attendant (marshaller) operate the Hi Lift truck to raise position aligning with the aircraft door.

  • After aligning to the aircraft door check for any damages around the aircraft service doors. If damage is found report to the certifying engineer and immediate supervisor. (Applicable Customer Airline(s) SOP). After confirming proper door alignment the Catering Attendant shall proceed to the procedure WI 015 for Safety Harnesh instruction and Door opening procedures for applicable customer airline(s) aircraft types.

Catering GSE/Hi Lift Truck(s), positioned at the aircraft, must ensure:

  • (i) to deploy the extension bridge towards the aircraft access door with the minimum gap of 4 inches from the aircraft door seal.

  • (ii) the transfer bridges or platform is correctly deployed when the equipment is in position at the aircraft access door.

  • (iii) the protective rubber buffers are not touching against the fuselage. Proceed to WI 006 Loading and Unloading zards(principles of good loading) and WI 008 Load and Unload carts and units.

  • When working at an elevated height ensure the GSE Hi Lift safety side railings are fully extended and locked in place with the gap between the end of each rail and the aircraft fuselage NO greater than 100mm (not touching the aircraft fuselage) check safety harness is fitted correctly.

  • Never step across from the GSE Hi Lift to the aircraft and back unless the gap between the Hi Lift platform edge and the aircraft door sill is no less than 50mm (to prevent damage to the aircraft) and no greater than 100mm (to prevent fall from height risk).

When commence door closing, check if any other persons inside the aircraft, once the platform bridge is removed no Catering staff is either allowed to enter the aircraft or the GSE Hi Lift truck(s).

  • After unloading and loading is completed the Catering Driver and Catering Attendant to communicate their exit point from the aircraft. After confirming their exit point the Catering Attendant /Catering Driver to remove the platform bridge and commence with Door closing procedures as per applicable customer airline(s) procedures

  • After Door closure the GSE Hi Lift extension bridge platform must be retracted to the full back position. The GSE Hi Lift truck to be lowered to ground position.

Catering Attendant/the guide/marshaller must guide Catering Attendant Driver(s) to ensure the Catering Hi-Lift truck is removed & parked outside the Equipment Restraint Area (ERA).

  • 1. The back-off route shall be checked to ensure that the area is clear of obstructions. .

  • 2.The rear chock shall be removed from the wheel and the front chocks shall be left in position.

  • 3.. When a guide person is used, the guide person must be positioned at the rear of the Catering Hi Lift truck on the wing side and in full view of the Catering Attendant Driver and use approved hand signals. The Catering Attendant Driver must stop immediately if the guide person is out of sight.

  • 4 .Once back off is completed, the front chocks shall be retrieved and stowed.

Catering Attendant is the guide person/marshaller. Catering Attendant Driver is the Hi Lift Truck operator.

  • Catering Ground Support Equipment/Catering Hi Lift Truck(s)/Catering Van(s)must not be driven across the path of a Taxiing aircraft, Embarking or Disembarking passengers on the ramp.

  • Catering Attendant Driver(s) /Catering Attendant(s) and Supervisor(s), Catering GSE and Catering vehicle in airside operations must stay clear of the passenger boarding bridge movement path prior to movement of bridge.

  • P.P.E. Must be worn as per the mandatory requirements while in operations airside

  • Toilet servicing takes precedence before loading of meals (to applicable customer airline(s) requirements.

  • All catering vehicles must always be 30 meters away from the toilet servicing truck.

  • All Catering Attendant(s)/Catering Attendant Driver(s)/Supervisors(s) must ensure to wear appropriate protective clothing or personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing duties (functions) related to their roles in airside operations.

Catering GSE that is self powered and positioned at the aircraft, and is being used during operations must:

  • (i) Remains in a position within easy reach of the emergency controls.

  • (ii) Remains in the operating position and in control of the equipment, if the equipment is not fitted with external emergency controls.

  • (iii) Does not leave Catering GSE unattended with engine running, except in cold weather operations with the GSE chocked.

On departing aircraft, as soon as the anti-collision beacons are on, all Catering staff(s) working airside must:

  • remain clear of propellers, engine inlets and exhaust.

  • All Catering GSE must be prohibited from being driven with elevating equipment in the raised position, except during final positioning of the equipment to the aircraft.

  • The hi-lift truck Catering Driver(s) will have full responsibility for positioning the truck onto the aircraft operating the truck body up or down, adjusting the forward extension and placing the wheel chocks. He will be aided by his/her Assistant (Catering Attendant).

  • Catering driver(s) must ensure that Catering GSE is subjected to a walkaround and safety check to verify the equipment is serviceable, prior to being used in operations, and the Catering GSE is used in accordance with the specific safety requirements.

Note: Catering Hi Lift Truck(s) is/are Catering GSE.

Ensure All Catering GSE: Catering Hi Lift Truck(s):

  • (i) Is parked only in designated airside equipment parking areas when not in use.

  • (ii) Is parked in a manner that does not obstruct access to firefighting equipment.

  • (iii) Is parked in a manner that does not obstruct access to the fuel hydrant emergency stop switch.

Unserviceable Catering GSE must be:

  • (i) reported and evaluated for removal from service when found to be defective.

  • (ii) tagged as "Out of Service" and removed from operations, when applicable.

  • Both the rear and the front hi-lift shutter doors must be closed to prevent loose items being blown onto the ramp. (FOD). Any foreign object found on the ramp must be disposed in the bins provided.

  • Wheel chocks to be placed in hi-lift Cab when not in use.

  • All Vehicle keys must be removed from all GSE's after completion of duties.

Drivers must not be disturbed/distracted while operating GSE.

All ATS Catering staff on duty must wear ATS ID/ FAL ID while performing allocated duties airside with mandatory PPE .
