Action on site

  • Uses the Voltstick prior to undertaking any work on any exposed metalwork to ensure it is safe to
continue and repeats when necessary

  • Carries out checks to establish the number of customers being supplied and isolates ECV prior to
disconnection

  • Removes wrapping from the service pipe at two places where cuts will be made, approximately 300mm
apart and cleans pipe

  • Fits a temporary continuity bond (TCB) across section to be removed ensuring that the pipe where the
TCB is to be clamped is clean and wired brushed to a bright finish to ensure a good electrical contact

  • Question - What action needs to take place if the Voltstick glowed or sparking occurred when fitting or removing the TCB?

  • Answer - Cease work and advise team manager

  • Wraps the pipe with a suitable denso tape/ mastic bandage prior to cutting

  • Dons breathing apparatus complete with associated PPE

  • Cuts through the denso tape/mastic bandage and pipe using a hacksaw and seals the cut with the
mastic as the cutting proceeds to minimise release of gas. Ensures that the cut piece (approx. 300mm)
can be easily removed
• Removes the cut section and fits caps to both ends, removes bend and plugs hole with the minimum
delay to reduce loss of gas

  • Question - What action should be taken to the plug to avoid a build-up of static charge and the possibility of a
spark?
• Answer - The plug should be earthed by resting the plug on the main about 350mm from the hole and slid along the
surface of the pipe to the hole

  • Tests the plug with SGN approved leak detection fluid

  • Removes continuity bond once the atmosphere is gas free

  • Disconnects / removes the existing standpipe, where possible and seals the standpipe entry

  • Question - What action should be taken if it is not possible to remove the standpipe?

  • Answer - The standpipe should be left in-situ and capped off and labelled with (SGNB608) to indicate service
    disconnected

  • Seals any abandoned service pipe ends in the ground using suitable caps

  • Checks properties to confirm that only the properties to be cut-off have been isolated
