• General requirements

 • Ensures the tool is within its test date and prepares the tapping tee loading tool for use

 • Ensures there is sufficient room around the pipe to fit the tool

 • Action if a single layer of pipe

 • Cleans the jointing area of the pipe with a clean, damp non-synthetic cloth or paper towelling. Washes
off the soapy water with clean water, if used and dries the pipe

 • Places the top-tee still retained inside its protective bag onto the main and with a felt tip marker pen
draws a line around the base area of the fitting ensuring a 25mm border around all sides. Marks the
area to be scraped in a cross hatched pattern

 • Scrapes the whole area outlined using an approved SGN scraper

 • Action if multilayer pipe

 • Uses an approved SGN pipe exposure tool to score the pipe skin and removes the skin

 • Actions on site - all pipe types

 • Opens the plastic bag containing the top-tee to only expose the spigot

 • With the fitting still in its protective bag, places the fitting against the pipe and with a felt tip
marker pen, marks half the length of the fitting plus 25mm and roughly marks a spiral line around
the pipe

 • Scrapes the spigot to beyond 25mm of the line marked on the spigot and ensures the scraped area
does not become contaminated

 • Removes the cap from the fitting and stores carefully and places the fitting into the top loading clamp

 • Removes the fitting from its protective bag

 • Removes any protective cover from the base of the fitting taking care not to contaminate the surface
containing the electrical fitting

 • Places the fitting and loading pressure tool centrally over the pipe. Assembles the pressure loading tool
onto the pipe. Applies the correct loading pressure on the fitting which is indicated by the indicator on
the tool

 • Connects the terminal leads from the control box onto the fitting using approved SGN connector leads

 • Enters the correct heating and cooling times for the fitting into the control box

 • Stands clear from the fitting whilst fusion is in progress. Does not adjust the loading tool during the
process

 • Checks if indicators have risen once the control box indicates that the fusion is complete

 • Disconnects the fusion leads and allows the fitting the required cooling time before the loading tool is
removed

 • Electrofusion of PE coupler or reducer

 • Prepares the SGN approved alignment clamp for use

 • Ensures there is sufficient clearance around the service pipe to fit the alignment clamp

 • With the fitting still in its protective bag places the fitting against the pipe and with a felt tip marker pen
marks half the length of the fitting plus 25mm and roughly marks a spiral line around the pipe

 • With the fitting still in its protective bag, places the fitting against the pipe and with a felt tip
marker pen, marks half the length of the fitting plus 25mm

 • What needs to be done to a coupler so as it can be slipped over both ends of the pipe when carrying out a cut-out operation?

 • Scrapes the whole area outlined using an approved SGN scraper

 • Removes the fitting from the protective bag and pushes the fitting over the scraped area of the service
pipe and spigot, ensuring the service pipe and spigot touches the central register in the coupler. Mark
the penetration depth on the side of the pipe at either end of the coupler

 • Assembles the alignment clamp on to the pipe and checks the penetration

 • Visually checks the pipe alignment in all planes once the alignment clamp has been fitted. Rotates the
fitting to ensure the assembly is not too tight

 • Connects the terminal leads from the control box onto the fitting using approved SGN connector leads

 • Enters the correct heating and cooling times for the fitting into the control box

 • Stands clear from the fitting whilst fusion is in progress. Does not adjust the loading tool during the
process

 • Checks if indicators have risen once the control box indicates that the fusion is complete

 • Disconnects the fusion leads and allows the fitting the required cooling time before the alignment
clamp is removed
