  • Preliminary Checks

  • Check with the customer to find out if there have been any problems with the appliance.

    Make sure that the appliance and its installation conform to the current gas regulations and standards.

    Check ventilation is sufficient where applicable

    Check the operation of the appliance including the ignition system and check there are no visible signs of spillage

    Check the flame picture

    Check all taps to ensure smooth operation

    Check the appliance working pressure is correct

    Check the operation of any FSD fitted

    If the appliance is fitted in a bedroom or bedsit and it is NOT room sealed, does it have a vitiation sensing device, and is it less than 14kW gross heat input (12.7kW net)?

  • Open flued and flueless gas appliances fitted in a bedroom after 1st January 1996 must be fitted with a device which will shut down the appliance if there is insufficient oxygen present in the room for the appliance to work properly

    Isolate the appliance from the gas and electricity supplies

    Remove the fire from the wall or surround

    Clear any debris from the catchment space

    Visually inspect the flue throughout its route including termination. Clear any blockages

    Clean any burners or injectors as necessary

    Re-grease any stiff taps

    Check burner box and heat exchanger for cracks, corrosion or damage

    Refit closure plate and seal on all four edges using heat resistant double sided or single sided tape. Make sure the air relief is not covered

    Where an inset live fuel effect fire is fitted, check that the seal at the back is in good condition and complete, if not, replace it

    Re-assemble and re-fit fire, making sure that it is level and stable

    Re-connect gas supply and test for gas tightness

    Purge gas supply

    Replace batteries where fitted

    Check for smooth ignition to all burners

    Check that the burner pressure is correct

    Check burners on all settings

    Check flame picture is satisfactory

    Position radiants, coals or logs as per manufacturer's instructions and ensure even heating

    Carry out a spillage test as shown in manufacturer's instructions. (Check for fans in the same room or any adjacent rooms) Fans must be on during the spillage test, to make sure they don't adversely affect the operation of the flue. Ceiling fans should be checked in both directions and at all speeds

    Check that all controls and safety devices function as intended, including any FSDs and make sure they shut off within the specified times

    Make sure the customer understands how to use the appliance and explain the need for a suitable fire guard where appropriate

    Make sure you leave all the instructions with the appliance

    Make sure you leave the site tidy
