Housekeeping and Rules

  • 1. A clean workplace must be maintained at all times. When a work activity is completed and at the end of the day all excess materials and waste must be removed. Waste materials must be disposed of in designated bins.
    2. Gangways, aisles, stairways and access routes must be kept clear at all times.
    3. Any spillages (e.g. oil, grease, liquids etc.) must be wiped up immediately.
    4. All materials, equipment and plant must be stored correctly and in a safe manner. Stores areas must be kept tidy at all times.
    5. Combustible materials and substances must be stored in the COSHH area and in a manner that will not pose a fire hazard.
    6. Trailing electrical leads must be avoided especially within general access areas. All trailing leads are to be tied up or protected so as not to cause a tripping hazard.
    7. All site warning signs and notices must be obeyed at all times.

Health and Welfare

  • 1. First aid equipment is available on site and within the GIG office. All accidents must be reported in the Client’s accident book and also in our accident book held by our Site Supervisor/Foreman.
    2. An injured person has a responsibility to ensure they receive appropriate action and any wound is cleaned and dressed correctly in order to prevent infection.
    3. Adequate washing and toilet facilities are provided. These areas must be treated with respect and be maintained in a clean and tidy condition after use.
    4. Food and drink must not be taken into and consumed in the workplace. Smoking is not allowed in the workplace and is only allowed in designated areas.
    5. Employees and subcontractors must always wash their hands before eating or drinking during work breaks.
    6. If there is any concern that material in the workplace may contain asbestos that was not previously identified, the situation must be brought to the attention of the GIG Site Supervisor/ Foreman without delay who will notify the Client and ensure appropriate action is taken.

Access and Egress

  • 1. Only authorised access and egress routes shall be used throughout the site. Any access platforms or bridge walkways must be fully boarded and have handrails where necessary.
    2. Stairways and passageways must always be kept clear of materials, equipment and any other obstructions.
    3. Adequate lighting must be provided in work areas and access routes. If lighting levels are not acceptable the GIG Site Supervisor/Forman must be notified and appropriate action will be taken.
    4. Employees must ensure there is adequate means of escape in the event of a fire and fire escape routes and muster points are known should there be the need for emergency evacuation of the site.

    Note: Our Client is responsible for ensuring the provision of adequate and safe access and egress to the workplace. If this is not provided it is an employee’s/ subcontractor duty to report the issue to the GIG Site Supervisor/Foreman who is responsible for taking appropriate action.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • 1. Safety helmets must be worn at all times on site. They must be checked on a regular basis to ensure they are not damaged or faulty and must be adjusted to fit correctly. They should not be exposed to excessive heat or be placed behind glass in direct sunlight. They must not be modified by drilling holes or cutting slots in them and they must not be painted.
    2. Safety footwear and hi-vis garments must be worn at all times in the workplace.
    3. Eye protection and gloves must be worn at all times in the workplace.
    4. Specific eye protection must be worn should there be a risk of an eye injury from activities such as drilling, chasing out, grinding etc.
    5. Ear protection will be provided and worn if excessive noise is experienced in the workplace.
    6. Any other PPE that is identified as being required through risk assessment must be worn/used as required.
    7. Whenever possible mechanical lifting and handling equipment (e.g. fork lifts, pallet trucks).should be used to move heavy or awkward loads.

    Note: PPE must be looked after. Any damage must be reported to the GIG Site Supervisor/Foreman who shall ensure action takes place to repair or replace as appropriate. Employees have a duty of care to their own health and safety and to ensure PPE is worn/used in the correct manner.

Fire Prevention and Emergency Evacuation

  • 1. Employees/ subcontractors are responsible for ensuring they are aware of the location of fire extinguishers. They must be easily accessible with particular regard to confined spaces and performing hot works.
    2. Employees/ subcontractors must be aware of what action to be taken in the event of a fire (i.e. evacuation procedure and location of the muster point).
    3. Employees/ subcontractors must always sign in and sign out when attending and leaving site in the GIG signing-in book held in the GIG site office.
    4. Employees/ subcontractors are not allowed to smoke on site except in designated areas.

General

  • 1. Employees must not use any equipment, or carry out work activities, without having received required training and must not carry out any work activity that is outside their scope of work

    • Allocation of safety responsibilities on site;
    • Site specific rules;
    • Safe systems of work, where applicable;
    • General hazards in and around their work area;
    • Specific hazards allied to their work area including the detail of the risk assessment and noise implications of that task;
    • Fire and emergency procedures (including the location and use of extinguishers);
    • First aid - names and locations of first aiders, introduction to them, position of first aid boxes and rules for their use;
    • Use, availability and storage of protective clothing and equipment;
    • Procedures for reporting accidents, injuries and property damage;
    • Welfare - location of canteens, toilets, etc, and other welfare matters;
    • The importance of hygiene and health.
