Risk Assessments and Communications

Lifting Operations

  • Are employees ever under a suspended load or in the drop zone of any load moving from vertical to horizontal?

  • Is there clear segregation of people and mechanical / lifting operations and means to prevent any unauthorized access into lifting / movement area? (Barricades, caution tape, etc.)

Electricity & Lock Out, Tag Out

  • Are only qualified and competent persons working on electrical systems or equipment including deenergizing and applying Lock Out Tag Out procedures?

Machine Guarding

  • Do all machines have appropriate guarding and are operators trained for the equipment they are operating?

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE

  • Are all employees, visitors, and contractors wearing eye protection and safety shoes within all manufacturing and service areas (including walkways)?

  • Are PPE requirements posted within the production work areas?

  • Is job-required PPE within the production work areas being worn?

Contractor Management

  • Do contactors have a GKN point of contact?

  • Prior to any works, are contactors signing-in, receiving a full site safety induction, and being monitored effectively throughout the duration of their work?

  • Do contactors have a risk assessment, method statement and permit to work (if needed)?

People & Vehicle Movement

  • Are employees using the designated pedestrian walkways and obeying all signage and instructions?

  • Are those in control of a mechanized vehicle; qualified and competent, wearing appropriate PPE, using a seatbelt, and following the site speed limit?

  • If required by risk assessment are trained Guides/Spotters being used?

Mobile Phones and Personal Electronics

  • Are employees using mobile phones or personal electronics while walking, operating a vehicle, equipment or carrying out a task (this includes texting, use of ear pods or hands-free devices)?

Fire & Explosions

  • In the event of emergency alarm do employees know to proceed to designated assembly areas?

  • Are emergency exits blocked?

  • Are fire controls / alarms disabled without proper authorization and risk mitigation?

  • Is smoking occurring in undesignated areas?

Chemicals

  • Do all chemicals in the workplace have an SDS and are they communicated to employees?

  • Are all containers correctly labeled and stored properly?

  • Are safety controls as per risk assessment in place and used correctly?

  • Are chemical releases reported immediately?

  • If a chemical spill is more than 5 gallons report to EHS. If a chemical spill is more than 55 gallons call ex.5555 and alert ERT response.

Conclusion
