GRT TOOLBOX TALK: Cutting Masonry Items with Cut-Off Saws
INTRODUCTION
Cut-off saws, often referred to as Stihl saws, are widely used for cutting masonry materials like blocks, bricks, and other features. However, these activities generate dust, which can be harmful to your health if inhaled. Proper precautions must be taken to minimize risks and protect your well-being.
FACTS
What is Silica?
Silica is a naturally occurring mineral found in materials such as bricks, concrete, mortar, and sandstone. When these materials are cut, fine dust particles containing silica are released into the air. If inhaled, this dust can penetrate deep into the lungs and lead to serious health conditions, including:
Silicosis
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Lung Cancer
What is Water Suppression?
Water suppression is a method used to control dust by spraying water onto the blade or cutting disk during operation. Spray heads or jets are attached to the guard on either side of the blade, and an on-off valve regulates water flow. A filter prevents blockage of the spray heads.
Key Features:
Water Supply Connection: Most cut-off saws have attachments for connecting to a water source, with a constant flow from a main water supply being ideal.
Portable Pressurized Bottles: These are commonly used and consist of an approximately 8-liter bottle that is manually pressurized to generate water flow.
Effective Dust Control: A flow rate of 0.5 liters per minute is required for optimal dust suppression. Excessive flow rates do not improve dust control and only increase water usage.
Best Practices:
Wear waterproof trousers to stay dry.
Use alternative marking methods (chalk may wash away).
Collect and dispose of slurry properly to prevent dried dust from becoming airborne.
Clean and maintain equipment, including water jets, hoses, and bottles, after each use.
Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)
Even with water suppression, it is crucial to wear suitable respiratory protection, specifically a Type FFP3 mask.
Guidelines for Using Masks:
Face Fit Test: Ensure the mask fits correctly with a proper face fit test.
Be Clean-Shaven: Facial hair can compromise the mask's seal, leading to leaks.
Training: Understand how to use, maintain, and inspect your mask.
Correct Fit: Always check the mask is worn properly and is functioning as intended.
CONCLUSION
Protect Your Lungs!
By following these guidelines, you can reduce the risks associated with cutting masonry materials and safeguard your health. Always operate tools correctly and adhere to the control measures outlined in your risk assessment.
