Step Ladder Checklist

Section A) Inspection Guidelines for Step Ladders

  • 1. Step ladders free from defects which could weaken e.g. wooden ladders – splinters, sharp edges, cracks or decay e.g. metal ladders – slivers, dents

  • 2. No steps missing or damaged so as to make them unsafe

  • 3. Surfaces free of mud, oil, grease or slippery materials

  • 4. Step ladder suitable for the work being carried out<br>(Used in one position for a maximum of 30 minutes

  • 5. Moveable parts operate freely without binding but are not loose or unstable

  • 6. Step ladder has non-slip safety feet in good condition

  • 7. Spreader on step ladder in good condition

Section B) Step Ladder Use Safety Tips - Selection and Placement

  • 8. Step ladder length appropriate for task<br>(not too long or too short)

  • 9. Step Ladder not to be used for anything other than intended purpose

  • 10. Step Ladder placed to prevent slipping<br>(step ladders have all 4 feet on firm footing)

  • 11. Step ladder placed only on flat surface (no boxes etc. to be used to gain height). Step ladder does not lean to one side or wobble

  • 12. In traffic areas, measures taken to prevent accidental displacement (doors locked or guarded prior to placing step ladder in front of them/barricade around work area)

Section C) Step Ladder Use Safety Tips - Climbing and Working From

  • 14. All users aware that only one person on the step ladder at a time

  • 15. All users aware to never work off the top of a step ladder. The users waist should not rise above the top of the handrail

  • 16. All users aware not to use rear braces of step ladder as steps unless so designed by manufacturer

  • 17. All users aware to not jump down from a step ladder or purposely skip steps when climbing up/down

  • 18. All users aware to face step ladder and maintain 3 point contact with ladder at all times when climbing

  • 19. All users aware when working from a step ladder to keep body aligned with centre of steps, to not lean backwards or overreach<br>(Step ladder moved frequently to avoid overstretching)

  • 20. Users aware to ensure step ladder is strong enough for purpose and when carrying something to have one hand free to grip the step ladder<br>(weight of employee and equipment less than the step ladder rating)

  • 21. Management team complete daily pre-use checks of step ladders

  • 22. Warning signs available to identify unsafe step ladders and are removed from service immediately

Section D) Training and Authorised Use

  • 23. All users trained in proper use and hazards related to step ladders

  • 24. No persons under 18 to have step ladder use

Sign Off

  • If you have answered 'At Risk' to any question in Part A, do not use the inspected step ladder. Mark as defective, take out of service and order a replacement. Parts B, C and D to be used as reminders of safe working practices and to ensure all staff are correctly trained and adhere to safe step ladder use procedures at all times. Where a question is answered 'At Risk' & corrective action is required, the Store Manager must ensure this is actioned.

  • Emergency lighting must be tested monthly using the appropriate emergency lighting test key.

    Where emergency lighting is not provided and torches are in place, monthly checks for faults, correct battery operation etc should still be made and recorded on this form.
