Self Assessment Questions

Chemical Management Structure

  • Have user groups been identified?

  • Has a supervisor/chemicals stock controller been appointed for each group or area?

  • Are there procedures in place for purchase, internal transport, storage and disposal of all chemicals?

  • Is hazardous chemical information provided in the area induction?

  • Are hazards and incidents for hazardous chemical exposure able to be reported by all workers?

Chemical Management Systems

  • Is a Chemwatch Manifest used as a Register for all hazardous chemicals, and to access SDS and safety information?

  • Are there systems in place to prevent regulated materials and controlled substances from being brought to the work area without prior approval?

Risk Assessment

  • Are risk assessments for tasks involving potential exposure to hazardous chemicals undertaken and approved BEFORE work commences?

  • Are Risk Assessments recorded in GSafe?

  • If not, can you describe the way in which managing risks associated with hazardous chemicals is undertaken and provide records of the systems on place?

Work Environment

  • Is appropriate entry hazard/safety signage clearly visible, containing information about required procedures, PPE, training, hazards and facility contacts?

  • Are areas where chemicals are used and stored restricted from entry to the public and/or locked and secured?

  • Is there adequate ventilation for fumes and dust?

  • Have the requirements for Health Monitoring (s368 Qld WHS Regulation) been considered for all workers, particularly any exposed to substances listed in Schedule 14 of the Qld WHS Regulation.

  • Are there systems in place to identify the use of any restricted, prohibited, regulated or specifically hazardous chemicals in the work area and has this information been communicated to the all workers in the work area?

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Is all PPE (recommended in the SDS) provided?

  • Is PPE worn/used correctly?

  • Is PPE stored correctly?

  • Is PPE maintained/cleaned regularly and replaced when necessary?

Storage

  • Are all chemicals stored in appropriate locations and facilties?

  • Are all chemicals stored in appropriate containers?

  • Are all chemicals, including waste, correctly stored and according to compatibility?

  • Is a compatibility chart readily available?

  • Are dangerous goods cabinets used and maintained in accordance with the relevant Australian Standard?

  • If chemicals are stored on open shelving is there a mechanism to prevent items falling off the shelf?

  • Are there bunding or spill trays for the storage of hazardous liquids?

  • If poisons are used/stored in the area are there relevant antidotes available?

Spills & Emergency Response

  • Are the emergency numbers, evacuation plans, and after hours contact information displayed?

  • Is the relevant firefighting equipment (fire blanket, extinguisher, hose reel, etc.) installed, accessible, clear of obstruction, and labelled accordingly?

  • Are spill kits available, maintained and suitable to handle all spill categories and sizes that could occur?

  • Is training provided to staff in the event of spills, contamination both environmental and personal or other chemical incidents?

  • Are eyewash and safety showers provided in or accessible from work areas that use chemicals?

Waste & Disposal

  • Is there a documented waste disposal procedure in place (no inappropriate disposal of waste into sinks etc.) made known to all workers?

  • Are there appropriate disposal pathways for chemicals and related waste.

  • Are there areas to store waste safely or procedures in place to remove it to a safe storage location as required?

  • Are waste disposal records kept?

Compressed Gases

  • Are compressed gas cylinder contents appropriately identified?

  • Are all cylinders secured appropriately by bracket or chain?

  • Are empty cylinders separated from full cylinders and clearly labelled?

  • Are appropriate resources (e.g. cylinder trolley) available for the transport of gas cylinders?

  • Are all cylinders stored at least 3m away from ignition sources or combustible materials and stored according to DG class with compatible gases?

  • Are the appropriate regulators for the gas in use available (e.g. stainless steel for corrosive gases, brass for non-corrosive gases)?

  • Are regulators checked or serviced routinely or on a schedule for replacement at defined intervals as required?

  • Are reticulated gas lines labelled and routinely serviced by accredited technicians and/or checked for leaks, kinks and signs of wear & tear?

  • Is gas use confined to areas with good local exhaust ventilation?

  • Are cylinders, pipes, regulators and valves protected from mechanical damage?
