Guidance: Site Management must use this Permit to Work when carrying out general Hot Works in an environment which could give rise to fire or explosions, etc. A copy of this document should be used as a working document on site and kept on site for the duration of the project in the site safety file. Support documentation is contained in Part two of the Policy for further guidance.

You must be in a position to answer yes to the following checklist questions

  • Has a Risk Assessment and Method Statement been produced specifically for this work and have persona who are involved in this work been informed?

  • Are persons carrying out this work competent and experienced with the type of hot work?

  • Is the equipment to be used in good working order and fitted with all appropriate safety devices?

  • Has the area where work is to be carried out been checked for any additional fire hazards such as combustible and flammable materials, flammable atmospheres, voids for combustible dusts etc?

  • Have combustible or flammable materials, etc been removed from the hot works areas?

  • Have non-moveable combustible or flammable materials been protected, covered or dampened?

  • If the fire/smoke detection system will be affected, is there a Permit to Work in place to allow the alarm system to be isolated where necessary for the specific area where works are being carried out?

  • Have others who are not connected with this work vacated the area?

  • Is the area adequately ventilated?

  • Have persons who will be involved in hot works been made aware of the emergency procedure, I.e fire fighting, raising the alarm and escape routes?

  • Are working areas suitably guarded off and appropriate signs displayed?

  • Have appropriate fire fighting appliances been positioned by the hot works are?

  • Has all appropriate PPE been provided?

  • Hot works must cease 1 hour before the end of the shift to ensure this mere is no potential risk of fire and duty holder must remain present in the vicinity for 1 hour to check the area is safe before signing off this Permit.
