PREPARATION

MATERIALS & STORAGE

  • ROLLS MUST BE STORED IN A VERTICAL POSITION AND STORED AT A TEMPERATURE OF NOT LESS THAN 5 DEGREES CENTIGRADE PROTECTED FROM THE SUN AND THE WEATHER.

CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN TRANSPORTING ROLLS AROUND SITE SO AS TO NOT GET DAMAGED PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.

  • Are the materials being stored correctly (undamaged) and safely?

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

  • Are there the correct tools and equipment on site?

SUBSTRATE

  • Are all areas to receive new waterproofing secure (fully cohesive), clean, dry, even (level) and smooth?

INSTALLATION

QUALITY OF LAP SEALING AND BITUMEN BEADING TO FLAT AREA

  • THE INTEGRITY OF WATERPROOFING DEPENDS ON PROPER OVERLAPPING OF MEMBRANE AND STAGGERING OF LAPS.

    NORDCOVER CONFORMITY REQUIRES:
150MM STAGGERED HEAD LAPS WHICH PROVIDE 130MM EFFECTIVE BOND &
100MM STAGGERED SIDE LAPS WHICH PROVIDE 80MM EFFECTIVE BOND.

NOTE; A SLIGHT BITUMEN BEAD IS RECOMMENDED.
WHERE PRACTICABLE OVERLAP JOINTS IN CAP SHEETS SHOULD BE MADE SO AS NOT TO BE OPPOSED TO THE FLOW OF WATER.

  • Does the quality of lap sealing and bitumen beading achieve Nord Cover conformity?

QUALITY OF SETTING OUT OF ROOF SHEET TO FLAT AREA.

  • ACCOUNT SHOULD BE TAKEN OF THE REQUIREMENT TO LAP SUCCESSIVE LAYERS, THE DIRECTION OF FALL AND ANY PHYSICAL FEATURES ON THE ROOF WHICH WILL AFFECT THE PATTERN OF LAYING.

AS BEST PRACTICABLE, MEMBRANES ARE TO BE UNROLLED UP THE SLOPE / FALL.

SUCCESSIVE LENGTHS OF MEMBRANE SHOULD BE LAID IN THE SAME DIRECTION BUT OFFSET BETWEEN LAYERS.

CROSS JOINTS SHOULD ALWAYS BE STAGGERED / OFFSET.

  • Does the quality of setting out of roof sheet to the flat area achieve Nord Cover conformity?

INSTALLATION: DETAILING

  • PLEASE NOTE; TO ADDRESS INCLEMENT WEATHER & RISK OF DRIVING RAIN BS:6229:2003 RECOMENDS THAT FLAT ROOF DESIGN INCORPORATES UPSTANDS OF AT LEAST 150MM ABOVE THE FINISHED ROOF LEVEL.

N.B. HOWEVER, THIS IS SOMETIMES RESTRICTED BY ORIGINAL ROOF/THRESHOLD DESIGN.

PONDING

  • It should be noted that minor ponding is likely to occur. BS 6229:2003 anticipates the inevitability of such occurrence, especially after a rain storm and particularly behind lapping.

BS 8217:2005 also notes that when designed to minimum falls, a small amount of transient ponding might be expected, e.g. Behind laps. This is unlikely to have a detrimental effect on high-performance flexible reinforced bitumen membranes.

Indeed standing water is in no way detrimental to the Nord Bitumi membranes installed by an approved Nord Bitumi UK installer.

  • Is there evidence of ponding?

  • If yes, does the extent achieve Nord Cover conformity?

MECHANICAL FIXINGS

  • BS 8217 2005 states that with slopes 5-25 degrees, the mechanical fastening/nailing of new waterproofing will be needed at maximum 150mm centres in two staggered lines along the top of each (maximum 8m long) cap sheet. Should the length of the pitched run exceed 8m, each cap sheet will need to be no more than 4m.

For further technical assistance please contact Nord Bitumi as required.

  • Are mechanical fixings (if applicable) correctly installed in accordance with wind loading calculations provided by Nord Bitumi?

CLEANLINESS

  • TYPICAL ISSUES INCLUDE;
Other trades not respecting areas of completed waterproofing and continuing to work on finished areas.
Installation repeatedly interrupted by other trades/site program.
    Sharps, fines, contaminations & spills.

PLEASE NOTE; NORDCOVER DOES NOT WARRANT DAMAGE CAUSED BY OTHER TRADES. IF NECESSARY FULL REMEDIAL REPAIR MAY BE NEEDED TO PERMIT NORCOVER WARRANTY ISSUANCE.

  • Are other trades respecting areas of completed waterproofing?

  • Has the installation been interrupted by other trades / site program?

  • Is there evidence of sharps, fines, contamination or spills?

  • Is there evidence of third party cabling, fixings or equipment?

  • Is cleanliness in accordance with Nord Bitumi standards?

SUMMARY

ELECTRONIC LEAK DETECTION TEST

  • Independant electronic leak detection test recommended?

COMPLY WITH WARRANTY?

  • Does the current installation achieve Nord Cover conformity?<br>Please note if this inspection relates to an Initial or Progress inspection then Nord Cover conformity can not be achieved.
