Safety Rail and Hand Rail Guarding at Stairs

All homes with stair access require at least one handrail. Unprotected sides of stairwell must be guarded with a top and mid rail.

Stair Guarding and Hand Rails must be installed immediately after installation of stairs.

  • Employee demonstrates understanding of need for immediate installation?

Stair railings and hand rails shall be continuous the full length of the stairs, and shall be surfaced as to prevent injury from punctures, lacerations and snagging of clothing. The upper surface of handrail shall be 38" inches from the nose of the tread. The handrail must be 1 1/2" from the wall or post. The Hand rail must begin at the first step and terminate at the landing and or next level deck. The hand rail can not extend 12" beyond the deck, landing or first step

Unprotected stair edges or sides, require a mid rail between stairway steps and upper edge of top rail. The mid rail must be 21" from the nose of the thread.
