• Today we will discuss Personal Protective Equipment or PPE. This toolbox talk aims to raise awareness about importance of wearing the right items to help protect us from potential hazards we encounter on site.

What is PPE?

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, gloves and other equipment designed to safeguard our bodies from injury or infections. PPE is essential for reducing accidents and the severity of injuries.

Types of PPE for Construction Sites

• Hard Hat- Protects against head injuries from falling objects. Always inspect hard hats for cracks or damage.

• Goggles.Protects eyes from dust/debris. Ensure they fit properly and are free from scratches.

• Masks. Protects against inhalation of dust, fumes and vapours. Ensure the mask is rated for specific hazard and fits.

• Gloves. Protects hands from cuts, chemicals, extreme heat. Select appropriate type of glove for the task.

• Safety Footwear. Steel toe boots protect against injuries. Ensure they are slip resistant for better traction.

• Hi-Vis Clothing. Essential to be seen by others, especially around machines. Wear reflective vests, ensure they are not ripped.

• Ear Protection. Use in noisy environments to prevent long term damage. Choose comfortable solution for you, plugs/defenders.

Importance of Using PPE

• 1.Reduces the risk of injury- most injuries can be prevented with correct PPE.
  2.Compliance with Regulations-it is often required by law and company policy.
  3.Sets a Safe Standard- creates a strong safety culture in the workplace.

Best Practice for PPE Usage

• -Inspect the PPE: before each use, check for damage.
  -Maintain your Equipment: keep PPE clean and stored properly when not in use.
  -Know the Rules: understand when and where PPE is required on site.
  -Do not Share: every worker should have their own PPE to avoid contamination and ensure proper fit.
  -Report Issues: report any damaged PPE to you supervisor straight away.
