Safety Leadership Walkthrough Tips

  • Ensure the Team Leader/Supervisor is taking full responsibility for their area

  • Personally model the desired safe behaviours, correct any staff that aren't (the standard you walk past is the standard you get)

  • Ensure the Team Leader/Supervisor is utilising their team effectively and that they are delegating and holding their team accountable for their actions

  • Listen to concerns and address genuine issues promptly and effectively, always look for the solution to be provided by the worker raising the issue

  • Ensure Team Leaders/Supervisors are providing constructive feedback to their teams immediately and frequently until any issues are resolved

  • Inspire all workers to take care of themselves and look out for fellow workers

  • Be absolutely consistent in your message and ensure that workers understand that their actions must be the same every time they complete their daily tasks.

  • Demonstrate you are serious about safety, make a fuss over any safety breach or incident or if you discover a serious hazard

  • State the company safety vision to workers clearly and frequently - Beyond Zero

  • During the walkthrough talk to as many workers as possible

  • Provide positive recognition for any workers doing the right thing immediately

  • Ensure that Team Leaders/Supervisors are demonstrating concern for the safety and comfort of their team and that they aren't waiting for complaints of accidents

Hazard Inspection

  • Are all aisles and walkways clear?

  • Take photo's of all identified issues

  • Are all fire exits and fire fighting appliances unobstructed?

  • Take photo's of all identified issues

  • Are all staff wearing the required PPE?

  • Take photo's of all identified issues

  • Are all areas free of any trip hazards?

  • Take photo's of all identified issues

  • Is all machinery guarding in place? If you are unsure ask the worker to point out the safety features of the guarding.

  • Have you been provided with the necessary tools and equipment to complete the job safely?

  • What inspections are conducted here to ensure the ongoing safe operation of the plant and equipment? Who conducts the inspection and how often?

  • Are all hazards and incidents reported here and are you invited to participate in the investigation?

  • List any details

  • Are there any tasks that are awkward or cause you discomfort, what are they and how could they be improved?

  • Is productivity treated more importantly than safety here and if so, could you provide an example?
