Confined Space

  • A work method statement and subsequent SWMS/JSAs has been developed to ensure all related hazards and risks have been assessed and controlled, taking into account relevant training needs, in accordance with associated legislation and standards (AS 2865) the nature of the work, air quality, duration of the exposure, the level of the risk involved with the confined space entry, the numbers of workers exposed, potential emergency situation & any client related needs.

  • A procedure that outlines a process for managing confined space entry and work risks, including, training, atmospheric contaminates and exposure, relevant risk and emergency planning.

  • Project risk assessment and relevant SWMS/JSAs identify, assess and identify controls to mitigate the risk of confined space entry and work.

  • Register of confined spaces on the project site.

  • Training and competency register.

  • Sub-contractor confined space training records.

  • Risk assessment and rating of confined spaces on the project site.

  • Confined space entry and work permit.

  • Atmospheric test results and relevant assessment of risks.

  • Confined space emergency plans/protocols.

  • Exposure levels have been identified and are within acceptable limits, in accordance with legislative requirements.

  • A procedure or similar documented process that identifies the relevant and applicable exposure standards and threshold limits and a process for testing confined space atmospheres to be within the limits prior to entry.

  • Atmospheric testing is specific to target contaminates and as a minimum includes LEL, Oxygen and CO.

  • Atmospheric testing is representative of contaminate concentration in entire space.

  • Confined space permit.

  • Atmospheric test results and relevant assessment of risks.

  • Emergency procedures that have been developed specifically address and control the confined space, and have been practiced.

  • An emergency plan or response protocol that addresses rescue and retrieval of personnel from a confined space including specifying emergency equipment, emergency personnel, a process for monitoring well being of personnel and maintaining communication.

  • Drill records of confined space response.

  • Confined space rescue and retrieval equipment is available and suitable.

  • There is documented evidence that the atmosphere is continually montored for changes in atmospheric contamination

  • A procedure that identifies a requirement to ensure continual monitoring of confined space atmosphere

  • Project risk assessment and relevant SWMS outline method for ensuring continuous monitoring of atmosphere.

  • Monitoring records and logs.

  • Testing instruments are a capable of continuous monitoring

  • Testing and calibration certificates and records for testing instruments

  • Confined space permit records

  • Appropriate PPE is being used by workers to minimise the exposure to atmospheric contaminants in accordance with the SWMs and relevant legislation.

  • A procedure that identifies a process for selection, maintenance and use of PPE used to prevent exposure in a confined space.

  • Respiratory protection is suitable to protect against target contaminants and minimise exposure to below workplace exposure standards.

  • SWMS define specific PPE requiremet and consistent with requirements.
