Floors and other Areas

  • Are walkways & fire exits clear from obstruction

  • Are floors in good condition (no holes, worn or loose planks or carpet sticking up)?

  • Any protruding objects such as nails. sharp corners, no objects encroaching into walkways?

  • Are personal items such as lunchboxes in assigned lockers or storage areas?

  • Is the work area clear

  • Are spill kits available?

  • Are cords and cables secured; any trailing leads?

  • Are walkways clearly defined with adequate signage?

  • Is the risk assessment for access and egress relevant to the area?

  • Are under the beds and ramps clear from waste/ rubbish?

  • Is housekeeping acceptable around storage areas e.g. no loose timbers etc?

  • Are plant equipment areas clear from rubbish i.e. de-coiler?

Stairways

  • Are stairways unobstructed and clearly marked?

  • Is the stairway light adequate? and Emergency lighting in place?

  • Are stair risers sprayed for clear visibility, and fixed protruding items clearly defined?

Waste Disposal

  • Is there adequate bins?

  • Are waste containers emptied regularly and not overflowing?

  • Are the correct containers available for different types of waste? e.g. steel, oily rags etc.

Equipment and Machinery Maintenance

  • Are all equipment in good working order, with no leaking or damaged parts

Storage Areas

  • Are storage areas safe and accessible?

  • Are all materials stacked securely, blocked or interlocked if possible?

  • Are materials stored in areas that do not obstruct stairs/ fire escapes or fire fighting equipment

  • Are bins or racks provided where materials cannot be piled

  • Has storage racking got an SWL and inspected regularly?

Fire Prevention

  • Are combustible and flammable materials stored appropriately, away from the walls of buildings and ignition sources?

  • Is fire fighting equipment services regularly and located in common travel routes to assist evacuation and close to ignition sources?
