Individual Hostler Operator was wearing PPE properly:

  • Manager conducting evaluation

  • Employee being evaluated

  • Hostling tractor being used

  • 01. Hard hat. (May be removed while driving)

  • 02. Reflective devices. (Lime green, breakaway vest)

  • 03. Steel toed safety boots.

  • 04. Safety glasses with side shields. (Clear color must be worn at night)

  • 05. Means of communication, if performing inspection alone.

  • 06. Gloves. (Depending on duties)

  • 07. Seat-belts. (Inside unit & utilized)

  • 08. Perform vehicle inspection, record inspection, adjusts mirrors, and clean windshield.

  • Automatic Failure if either the inspection or the posting of the record of inspection is not completed.

  • 09. Drives defensively.

  • 10. Drives within speed limits.

  • 11. Uses beacon light.

Parking Units

  • Observe at least three units, score based upon average.

  • 19. Come to full stop prior to dropping unit on sand shoes.

  • Automatic Failure if parking unit too close to trackside, allowing unit to be struck.

  • 20. As necessary, adjust sand shoe legs for proper height for over the road trucks.

  • 21. Manually disconnect air lines. (Not from seat of vehicle)

  • 22. Pull out from under unit slowly with caution.

Container Mounting To Chassis

  • Observe at least three units, score based upon average.

  • 23. Position chassis under container by backing.

  • Automatic Failure if operating under a raised container

  • 24. When parking hostlers, turn all lights and ignition off. Engage parking brake and leave transmission in neutral.

  • 25. Report defects to supervisor.

  • Note: Safety defects will place hostler out-of-service

  • 26. Maintains cleanliness of cab floor and all windows.

  • 27. Locks all four (4) twist locks prior to movement from trackside.

Connecting To Units

  • Observe at least three units, score based upon average.

  • 12. Backs to unit, adjusting fifth wheel height prior to contacting unit.

  • 13. Backs slowly engaging kingpin in jaws.

  • 14. Performs tug test ensuring kingpin locked.

  • 15. Attaches both emergency and service air lines.

  • 16. Raises unit prior to movements so sand shoes are off of ground.

  • 17. If trailer brakes are locked, do not drag tires, ensure both air lines are attached properly. Request maintenance if necessary.

  • Automatic Failure if trailer is continually pulled with brakes locked.

  • 18. Merge from parking space, cautiously.

  • Automatic Failure if hostler operators are observed pulling through vacant parking spots, using them for short cuts.
