Major Defects

  • Major Defects:

    Allowance of up to 2 bags in 100 to contain a major defect. Any greater than this is outside of specification.

    Include Green, rot, breakdown, damage, fleck, scab, major malformation, large lenticels.

Minor Defects

  • Minor defects:

    An allowance of up to 1 potato in every 10 to have a minor defect. Greater than this means the product does not meet specification.

    Minor defects include:
    Staining / skin marks
    Budding
    Damage up to 2mm wide and 10 mm long
    Healed insect damage
    Minor malformation
    Rhizoctonia less than 1 square cm
    Scuffing
    Webbing less than 25 percent of surface area and not flaking
    Bruising less than 1 mm deep
    Dark lenticels that are greater than 1mm in diameter, sunken or greater than 50% of surface area.
    Minor defects should be less than 2 squared cm, if greater that can be considered major defects.

    Minor defects should be measured on a per pack basis, an allowance of up to 1 in 10 is allowed. Coles specs measure this using kg of defect per kg checked as a %.

    A potato with more than 1 defect can only be counted for one of the defects. Do one line per defect.

Temperature

  • Put in temp probe first thing and take reading last so it has time to settle.

    Temperature:
    Potato: green = 6 - 16 degrees C, amber +\- 3 degrees. Red 19 degrees + or less than 3 degrees.
    Onion: green = 8 - 20 degrees, amber down to 5 or up to 23. Red outside this.
