Monthly Laser Safety Checklist

  • Ensure all authorised users have read and signed the local laser safety rules and rules are easily accessible within controlled area.

  • Verify that the laser room is designated as a ‘Controlled Area’ with appropriate signage

  • Check that laser warning signs are clearly visible and in good condition

  • Ensure that the laser room door can be locked from inside, restricting access to authorised personnel only.

  • Inspect safety glasses for all laser heads for any scratches, cracks, or damage. Ensure all colour coding is visibl

  • Check that smoke evacuators are functioning correctly, with no blockages, and filters are in good condition.

  • Review the laser fault logbook to ensure all usage and maintenance activities are recorded and reported as per fault reporting SOP.

  • Confirm the presence of a fire extinguisher in or near the laser room and verify its last inspection date.

  • Ensure the laser key is stored securely when not in use, following the Key Policy.

  • Perform a visual inspection of the laser for any loose fittings, faults, or damage.

  • Ensure removal of all reflective objects (e.g., mirrors, ornaments etc) from the room before laser operation.

  • Check that all windows are covered or blocked to prevent accidental exposure to laser light.

  • Confirm that protective eyewear (CE marked) for all wavelengths is available and functional for both operators and patients, ensure masks are available and within use by date

  • Ensure grab bag contents are present, in good condition and within date, use content list for reference.

  • Review if any incidents occurred, and confirm proper reporting and follow-up actions were taken.

  • Ensure the laser accident contingency plan is accessible, and staff are familiar with the procedures.

  • Ensure the authorised user register is up-to-date and only trained staff are operating the laser.
