  • Ends of rope for excessive wear

  • Internal damage .On cable-laid ropes ,open up the lay and inspect as above.On kernmantel ropes feel for unusually soft or hard areas ,on sheath or core .

  • If in any doubt ,remove from service

Harnesses visual and tactile checks

  • Inside and outside any textile attachment point loops for all the features listed under the general checking procedure .

  • Fastening and adjustment buckles for correct assembly

  • Fastening and adjustment for excessive wear .

  • Fastening and adjustment buckles for corrosion

  • Fastening and adjustment buckles for cracks or other damage .

  • If any doubt ,remove from service .

Cows tails ,lanyards ,strops and slings visual and tactile checks.

  • Inside and outside and attachment point loops for all the features listed under the the general checking procedure .

  • All knots for security

  • That knot overlaps are sufficient

  • That knot in cows tails are not too tight .

  • If in any doubt ,remove from service .

Metal components -Descenders

  • Have you read the information from the manufacturer?

  • Wear ,particularly on bobbins

  • Deformation

  • Cuts and cracks .

  • Heavy marking or scoring

  • Burring

  • Corrosion

  • Contamination by chemicals

  • Moving parts function correctly

  • Threaded assemblies are fully tightened and correctly secured

  • If any doubt on any point ,remove from service .

Ascenders /Back up devices visual and tactile checks

  • Have you read the information supplied by the manufacturer?

  • Wear and tear on cam teeth or face ,absorbica

  • Deformation

  • Cuts and cracks

  • Heavy marking or scoring

  • Burring

  • Corrosion

  • Contamination by chemicals

  • Moving parts are working correctly

  • Threaded assemblies are fully tightened and correctly secured .

  • If in any doubt on any point ,remove from service .

Connectors visual and tactile checks

  • Have you read the information supplied by the manufacturer?

  • Wear ,particularly where the rope or webbing normally lies .

  • Deformation

  • Cuts and cracks

  • Heavy marking or scoring

  • Burring

  • Corrosion

  • Contamination by chemicals

  • Incorrect functioning

  • Screw gates and spring are in good working order

  • If in any doubt or any point ,remove from service .

Helmets -Visual and tactile inspections

  • Have you read the information supplied by the manufacturer?

  • Is the Helmet within the manufacturers recommended lifespan .

  • Cracks ,deformation or other damage to the shell .

  • Damage to the chinstrap assembly

  • Excessive wear to any part .

  • If in any doubt ,remove from service
