Prior to Excavation Starting

  • Have any live services surrounding the work area been identified?

  • Have any identified live services been communicated to all<br>personnel working in the area?

  • Have any live services within the work area been identified?

  • Can a safe distance between live services be maintained, protected<br>or isolated?

  • When relevant, are copies of isolation certification available?

  • Are buried services clearly identified / marked at ground level?<br>Additionally, are live services shown on site plans?

  • Have CAT location equipment been utilised to locate buried<br>services?

  • Is an excavation permit upto date and accurate for the work being<br>undertaken?

  • Are contingency arrangements in place should services be<br>damaged?

  • When excavating in close proximity to live buried services,
    excavators or excavating power tools should operate a minimum of
    0.5m of the indicated line of services.
    Closer proximity excavating or where precise indications of services
    are unclear should be undertaken by hand dig only.

Overhead cables

  • In the case of travelling under live overhead power lines
    (Un-insulated electrical lines between 11 and 400 KV), the local
    electricity company should be consulted regarding safe systems of
    work and minimum distances to be maintained.

  • In the case of overhead services, are there goal post systems in<br>place where vehicles are travelling underneath?

  • Are warning signs conspicuously placed?

  • In the case of overhead services, are demarcation barriers/fencing<br>in place?

  • Were applicable, are other forms of protection in place such as<br>scaffold, scaffold fans, over plating etc?

  • In the case of live overhead power lines are minimum distances
    being maintained ie; minimum distance from ground level barrier to
    power line 6 metres, plus full crane or excavator jib length.
    (The local electricity company should be consulted before any work
    commences and a safe system of work should be devised and
    implemented)
